{{Short description|Section of an arrangement in Danzón and related styles}}
In [Afro-Caribbean music](/source/Afro-Caribbean_music), '''mambo''' is the section of an arrangement in [Danzón](/source/Danz%C3%B3n) and related styles, which features instrumental improvisation.

==History==
The beginning of the evolution of this section from [montuno](/source/montuno) is attributed to [Machito](/source/Machito) and his [Afro-Cubans](/source/Afro-Cubans_(band)), who included material, new to Afro-Caribbean music, for [brass](/source/brass_instruments) and [saxophone](/source/saxophone)s, borrowed from the [big band](/source/big_band) style.

[Israel "Cachao" López](/source/Israel_%22Cachao%22_L%C3%B3pez) added an [open](/source/open-ended_improvization) [vamp](/source/vamp_(music)) to Danzón and called it "[nuevo ritmo](/source/nuevo_ritmo)" ("new rhythm"), which was later called "'''Mambo section'''." and eventually evolved into [Mambo music](/source/Mambo_music).<ref>Jim Payne, [Tito Puente](/source/Tito_Puente), p. 56-57</ref><ref>[Max Salazar](/source/Max_Salazar), [http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0FXV/is_7_12/ai_92403678 "Orestes Lopez and the mambo"], ''[Latin Beat Magazine](/source/Latin_Beat_Magazine)'', September 2002</ref>
