# Maitama

**Maitama** is a district in Phase 1 of [Abuja](/source/Abuja), the capital city of [Nigeria](/source/Nigeria). The district hosts various foreign embassies, high commissions, and governmental buildings. It houses several of Abuja's most well known landmarks, such as the [Millennium Park](/source/Millennium_Park_(Abuja)), Minister's Hill, the Unity Fountain, the [IBB](/source/Ibrahim_Babangida) Golf Club, and the [Transcorp Hilton](/source/Transcorp_Hotels_plc).[1] Maitama is home to the headquarters of the [NCC](/source/Nigerian_Communications_Commission), [NCS](/source/Nigeria_Customs_Service), [NUC](/source/National_Universities_Commission), [AMCON](/source/Asset_Management_Corporation_of_Nigeria), [NSIA](/source/Nigeria_Sovereign_Investment_Authority), [NIPC](/source/Nigeria_Investment_Promotion_Commission), [NEPC](/source/Nigerian_Export_Promotion_Council), [CAC](/source/Corporate_Affairs_Commission), [NYSC](/source/National_Youth_Service_Corps), [RMRDC](/source/Raw_Materials_Research_and_Development_Council), [NHRC](/source/National_Human_Rights_Commission), [TETFUND](/source/Tertiary_Education_Trust_Fund), [INEC](/source/Independent_National_Electoral_Commission_(Nigeria)), [NEMA](/source/National_Emergency_Management_Agency_(Nigeria)), [TCN](/source/Transmission_Company_of_Nigeria) and other parastatals.

The district is situated to the north of Abuja, with the [Wuse](/source/Wuse_District,_Abuja) and Central Districts lying to its southwest and southeast respectively. Due to its rapid growth, the district is currently undergoing further extension as of 2023.[2]

## History

The earliest known settlers to Maitama were the Koro people, who traced their migration from Likoro near [Zaria](/source/Zaria) back to 1715. Under the leadership of the then Wambai of Likoro, they migrated to [Kagarko](/source/Kagarko) before eventually relocating to Maitama. The name *Maitama* is believed to have originated from the mining and iron smelting activities that were prevalent in the settlement. A fatal landslide in the mining pit forced them to abandon Maitama and establish a new settlement named [Wuse](/source/Wuse_District,_Abuja).[3][4]
