The river [Leiße](/source/Lei%C3%9Fe) flows through the village. Mailar borders on the villages of  [Dorlar](/source/Dorlar), [Sellinghausen](/source/Sellinghausen), Heiminghausen, [Menkhausen](/source/Menkhausen) and [Niederberndorf](/source/Niederberndorf).

The first written document mentioning ''"Megghelerdates"'' dates from 1365. The village used to belong to the municipality of [Berghausen](/source/Berghausen_(Schmallenberg)) in Amt Schmallenberg until the end of 1974.
