It is located {{convert|144.6|km|mi|abbr=on}} north of [Kano](/source/Kano_(city)), and was previously part of [Kano State](/source/Kano_State) until 1991 when [Jigawa State gained statehood](/source/List_of_Nigerian_states_by_date_of_statehood).
