In the mid-2000s, Mahboula was essentially "uninhabited, with a few old buildings and unsafe streets."  In 2013, the [Kuwait Oil Company](/source/Kuwait_Oil_Company) announced plans to expand its business, which led to an explosion of residential development in adjacent areas&mdash;including Mahboula.  By 2016, tens of [apartment building](/source/apartment_building)s had sprouted, though the construction quality, environmental impacts, and infrastructure demands were questioned by the ''[Kuwait Times](/source/Kuwait_Times)''.  That newspaper also reported that renting {{convert|3|to|4|sqm|adj=on|spell=in}} apartments cost 170&ndash;{{currency|450|KWD|first=yes}} (equivalent to {{inflation|US|{{to USD|170|KWT|year=2016}}|2016}}&ndash;{{inflation|US|{{to USD|450|KWT|year=2016}}|2016|fmt=c}} [United States dollar](/source/United_States_dollar)s in {{inflation/year|US}}).<ref name="2016-02-06 Kuwait Times" />
