# Magnificient Style

**Magnificient Style** (foaled 21 March 1993) is an American-bred, British-trained [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) racehorse. She only raced as a three-year-old, winning two of her four races, including the [Musidora Stakes](/source/Musidora_Stakes). Since retiring from racing she has become a successful [broodmare](/source/Mare), with her progeny including [Playful Act](/source/Playful_Act), [Nathaniel](/source/Nathaniel_(horse)) and [Great Heavens](/source/Great_Heavens). She was trained by [Henry Cecil](/source/Henry_Cecil) and owned by Buckram Oak Holdings.

## Background

Magnificient Style is a [bay](/source/Bay_(horse)) [mare](/source/Mare) bred by Buckram Oak Farm and foaled in March 1993.[1][2] She was sired by [Silver Hawk](/source/Silver_Hawk_(horse)), who won the [Craven Stakes](/source/Craven_Stakes) and finished third in [The Derby](/source/Epsom_Derby).[3] Silver Hawk also sired Epsom Derby winner [Benny the Dip](/source/Benny_the_Dip)[4] and [St. Leger Stakes](/source/St._Leger_Stakes) winner [Mutafaweq](/source/Mutafaweq),[5] as well as [Grass Wonder](/source/Grass_Wonder), [Magnificent Star](/source/Magnificent_Star), [Memories of Silver](/source/Memories_of_Silver), [Nashoba's Key](/source/Nashoba's_Key) and [Wonder Again](/source/Wonder_Again).[6] Magnificient Style's dam was Mia Karina, a daughter of [Icecapade](/source/Icecapade_(horse)).[2] Mia Karina also foaled [Siberian Summer](/source/Siberian_Summer), who won the Grade 1 [Strub Stakes](/source/Strub_Stakes) in 1993.[7] Magnificient Style was trained by [Henry Cecil](/source/Henry_Cecil).[1]

## Racing career

Magnificient Style made her racecourse debut on 8 April 1996 in a ten-[furlong](/source/Furlong) [maiden](/source/Maiden_race) at [Kempton Park](/source/Kempton_Park_Racecourse). Jockey [Willie Ryan](/source/Willie_Ryan_(jockey)) held her up near the rear of the field and took the lead with two furlongs left to run. In the closing stages she pulled clear and won by six [lengths](/source/Horse_length) from Migwar.[8] Magnificient Style's next start came in the [Pretty Polly Stakes](/source/Pretty_Polly_Stakes_(Great_Britain)) at [Newmarket](/source/Newmarket_Racecourse). She started as the favourite, but [Pat Eddery](/source/Pat_Eddery) could not get her to settle in the race and she finished third, five and a half lengths behind winner Pricket.[9] Pricket then went on to finish second in the [Oaks](/source/Epsom_Oaks) on her next start.[10]

On 14 May 1996, Magnificient Style started at the price of [5/2](/source/Fixed-odds_betting) for the Group 3 [Musidora Stakes](/source/Musidora_Stakes) at [York](/source/York_Racecourse) and faced four rivals. Ridden by [Mick Kinane](/source/Michael_Kinane), she took the lead from the start. She was never caught and won the race by one and three quarter lengths from [Sil Sila](/source/Sil_Sila), with Obsessive a further length behind in third place.[11] Sil Sila won the [Prix de Diane](/source/Prix_de_Diane) in her following race.[12] Magnificient Style's fourth and final race was the [Ribblesdale Stakes](/source/Ribblesdale_Stakes) at [Ascot](/source/Ascot_Racecourse), where she was ridden by Pat Eddery and started as the 13/8 favourite. As in her previous race, she led from the start, however she could not stay in front and faded to finish sixth, over ten lengths behind winner Tulipa.[13] During her racing career, Magnificient Style won [£](/source/Pound_sterling)30,744 in prize money.[1]

## Stud career

Magnificient Style was retired to Swettenham Stud, where she established herself as a top broodmare. She was purchased privately by Kincorth Investments in 2007,[14] and her foals so far are:

- **Stylelistick** – a bay mare sired by [Storm Cat](/source/Storm_Cat) and foaled in 1999 who won the [Appalachian Stakes](/source/Appalachian_Stakes).[15]
- **Echoes In Eternity** – a bay mare sired by [Spinning World](/source/Spinning_World) and foaled in 2000. She won four races, including the [Sun Chariot Stakes](/source/Sun_Chariot_Stakes) and [Park Hill Stakes](/source/Park_Hill_Stakes).[16]
- **Percussionist** – a bay [gelding](/source/Gelding) sired by [Sadler's Wells](/source/Sadler's_Wells_(horse)) and foaled in 2001. On the [flat](/source/Flat_racing) he won the [Lingfield Derby Trial](/source/Lingfield_Derby_Trial) and [Yorkshire Cup](/source/Yorkshire_Cup_(horse_race)) and finished fourth in the Epsom Derby. Percussionist also raced over [hurdles](/source/Hurdling_(horse_race)) and won the [American Grand National](/source/American_Grand_National) in 2010.[17]
- **[Playful Act](/source/Playful_Act)** – a bay mare sire by Sadler's Wells and foaled in 2002. She was a successful two-year-old, winning the [May Hill Stakes](/source/May_Hill_Stakes) and [Fillies' Mile](/source/Fillies'_Mile). As a three-year-old she won the [Lancashire Oaks](/source/Lancashire_Oaks) and finished second in the [Irish Oaks](/source/Irish_Oaks).[18] In 2007, Playful Act broke the world record for the auction price of a broodmare, when she was purchased by [Sheikh Mohammed](/source/Mohammed_bin_Rashid_Al_Maktoum) for $10.5 million at Keeneland's November breeding stock sale.[19][20]
- **Distinctive Look** – a bay mare sired by [Danehill](/source/Danehill_(horse)) and foaled in 2003 who won a maiden race at [Goodwood](/source/Goodwood_Racecourse).[21]
- **Petara Bay** – a bay gelding sired by [Peintre Celebre](/source/Peintre_Celebre) and foaled in 2004. He raced from 2006 to 2012 and won the [Feilden Stakes](/source/Feilden_Stakes) in 2007.[22]
- **Changing Skies** – a bay mare sired by Sadler's Wells and foaled in 2005 who raced in Europe until being sent to America in 2009, where she won [The Very One Stakes](/source/The_Very_One_Stakes) and [La Prevoyante Handicap](/source/La_Prevoyante_Handicap), and was just beaten in the Grade 1 [Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes](/source/Flower_Bowl_Invitational_Stakes).[23]
- **Monterey** – a bay gelding sired by [Montjeu](/source/Montjeu) and foaled in 2007 who won two minor races in Great Britain.[24]
- **[Nathaniel](/source/Nathaniel_(horse))** – a bay horse sired by [Galileo](/source/Galileo_(horse)) and foaled in 2008. As a three-year-old in 2011 he won the [King Edward VII Stakes](/source/King_Edward_VII_Stakes) and [King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes](/source/King_George_VI_and_Queen_Elizabeth_Stakes). In 2012 he won the [Eclipse Stakes](/source/Eclipse_Stakes) and was just beaten by a nose by [Danedream](/source/Danedream) in that years King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He now stands as a [stallion](/source/Stallion) at [Newsells Park](/source/Newsells_Park) Stud for a stud fee of £20,000.[25] His first crop of foals will race as two-year-olds in 2016.
- **[Great Heavens](/source/Great_Heavens)** – a bay mare sired by Galileo and foaled in 2009. She only raced once as a two-year-old, before winning her first four races as a three-year-old in 2012, including the [Lancashire Oaks](/source/Lancashire_Oaks) and [Irish Oaks](/source/Irish_Oaks). She then finished sixth in the [2012 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe](/source/2012_Prix_de_l'Arc_de_Triomphe) and fourth in the [British Champions Fillies' and Mares' Stakes](/source/British_Champions_Fillies'_and_Mares'_Stakes), which was her last start.[26]
- **Throne Room** – a bay [colt](/source/Colt_(horse)) sired by [Oasis Dream](/source/Oasis_Dream) and foaled in 2011. He raced in two maidens in 2013, finishing fourth and second, but died as a two-year-old.[27]
- **Willoughby** – an unraced [filly](/source/Filly) sired by Oasis Dream and foaled in 2012.[28]
- **Rocksavage** – a colt sired by [Fastnet Rock](/source/Fastnet_Rock_(horse)) and foaled in 2013. He raced twice in 2015 without winning.[29]
