**Magix Software [GmbH](/source/GmbH)** (or simply **Magix**, stylized in all caps) is a German software company specializing in [video editing](/source/Video_editing), [audio editing](/source/Audio_editing), [DAW](/source/Digital_audio_workstation) and [photo slideshow](/source/Photo_slideshow) software.[1] The company is based in [Berlin](/source/Berlin), with locations in [Madison, Wisconsin](/source/Madison%2C_Wisconsin), [Dresden](/source/Dresden) and [Lübbecke](/source/L%C3%BCbbecke), as well as [Huizen](/source/Huizen) in the Netherlands.[2]

## Product history

In 1994, the first edition of [Magix Music Maker](/source/Magix_Music_Maker) was released.[3] Starting in 1996, the Magix product range was extended to include software for designing, editing, presenting and archiving photos and videos[*[clarification needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*]. Magix products and services were first offered in other European countries and the USA starting in 1997.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

In 1997, the first [video editing](/source/Video_editing) software by the company, [Magix Movie Edit Pro](/source/Magix_Movie_Edit_Pro) (also known as "Magix Video Deluxe" in Europe), was released.[4] In 2002, the first version of Magix Photos on CD & DVD (now known as "Magix Photostory Deluxe") was released. This program is for creating [photo slideshows](/source/Photo_slideshow).

Magix has also released VR video editing software and several Android mobile apps (Camera MX, Acid Beatbox, Looply for music, video editing and animation for younger audiences).

In May 2016, Magix acquired [Vegas Pro](/source/Vegas_Pro), Movie Studio, [Sound Forge](/source/Sound_Forge) and [ACID Pro](/source/ACID_Pro) from the [Sony Creative Software](/source/Sony_Creative_Software) product range.[5][6]

In May 2018, private equity firm Capiton announced that it had acquired a majority stake in Magix Software GmbH together with its management.[7][8]

In 2023, Magix filed for insolvency and in 2025, VEGAS Creative Software and Magix Software GmbH were acquired by RM Equity Partners.[9]

In 2026, Boris FX Acquires Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro. The acquisition brings new AI technology to Boris FX, along with the notable video editing and audio products. The additions further cement Boris FX’s commitment to provide artists and teams across media & entertainment, content creation, and music & sound industries with top tools that deliver fast, powerful, and unlimited creative possibilities.[10]
