**Magdalena "Magda" Lilly Eriksson** (also **Ericsson**; born 8 September 1993) is a Swedish professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who plays for [Frauen-Bundesliga](/source/Frauen-Bundesliga) side [Bayern Munich](/source/FC_Bayern_Munich_(women)). Primarily a [centre-back](/source/Centre-back), she can also play as a [left-back](/source/Left-back). She represented [Sweden](/source/Sweden_women's_national_football_team) at international level, and earned 123 caps between 2014 and 2025.

At the beginning of her professional career, Eriksson played for the Stockholm clubs [Hammarby IF](/source/Hammarby_Fotboll_(women)) and [Djurgårdens IF](/source/Djurg%C3%A5rdens_IF_Fotboll_(women)) until she moved to [Linköpings FC](/source/Link%C3%B6pings_FC) in 2013, where she won two [cup](/source/Svenska_Cupen_(women)) titles and the [league title](/source/Damallsvenskan) in 2016 during her five years at the club.

In 2017, Eriksson moved to England and signed for [Chelsea](/source/Chelsea_F.C._Women) in the [Women's Super League](/source/Women's_Super_League) (WSL). There, she established herself as one of the best central defenders in Europe and was named team captain in 2019. With Chelsea, she won five WSL titles, and also reached the final of the [UEFA Women's Champions League](/source/UEFA_Women's_Champions_League) in the [2020–21 season](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_UEFA_Women's_Champions_League). In 2020, she was named [Swedish Footballer of the Year](/source/Diamantbollen).

Eriksson, like her fiancée [Pernille Harder](/source/Pernille_Harder), is also known for her LGBTQ+ advocacy and LGBTQ+ rights in sport.[5][6]

## Club career

Eriksson began her football career with local team [Enskede IK](/source/Enskede_IK), but was encouraged by her father to join [Hammarby IF](/source/Hammarby_Fotboll_(women)) to improve her game. Aged 17, she broke into Hammarby's first team in the [2011 Damallsvenskan](/source/2011_Damallsvenskan) season and made her debut against [Umeå IK](/source/Ume%C3%A5_IK).[7]

In November 2011, Eriksson left [relegated](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) Hammarby for their Stockholm rivals [Djurgårdens IF](/source/Djurg%C3%A5rdens_IF_Fotboll_(women)).[8] After scoring one goal in 19 appearances in the [2012 Damallsvenskan](/source/2012_Damallsvenskan), she left Djurgården, who were facing relegation, and joined [Linköpings FC](/source/Link%C3%B6pings_FC).[9]

In July 2017, after almost five years with Linköpings FC, Eriksson signed a two-year contract with [Women's Super League](/source/FA_WSL_1) team [Chelsea Ladies](/source/Chelsea_F.C._Women).[10][11] In August 2018, she extended her contract until 2021,[12] and eventually became the team's captain in 2019.[13] She extended her contract once again in November 2020, this time until 2023.[14] On 9 December 2020, Eriksson made her 100th appearance for Chelsea in a 5–0 [Champions League](/source/UEFA_Women's_Champions_League) win over [Benfica](/source/S.L._Benfica_(women)).[15]

Her performances over the years, especially following Chelsea's WSL title-winning [2020–21](/source/2020%E2%80%9321_Chelsea_F.C._Women_season) season, have seen Eriksson hailed as one of the best defenders in Europe.[16] After six years with Chelsea, for whom she made over 180 appearances and won over 10 trophies, Eriksson left the club at the end of the [2022–23](/source/2022%E2%80%9323_Chelsea_F.C._Women_season) season along with her partner [Pernille Harder](/source/Pernille_Harder_(footballer)).[17]

On 1 June 2023, Eriksson and Harder were unveiled as a new players of [Frauen-Bundesliga](/source/Frauen-Bundesliga) club [Bayern Munich](/source/FC_Bayern_Munich_(women)), signing three-year contracts.[18][19] In December's [Champions League](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_UEFA_Women's_Champions_League) clash against [Ajax](/source/AFC_Ajax_(women)), she suffered a broken metatarsal in her left foot, which required surgery.[20] She returned to the team three months later, in March 2024, coming on as a second-half substitute during a 5–0 victory over [RB Leipzig](/source/RB_Leipzig_(women)).[21] At the end of the season she won her first Championship with Bayern. Eriksson's 2024/25 season with FC Bayern was very successful: the team won the double for the first time with the German championship and the DFB Cup and also won the newly created World Sevens Football small-field tournament. On 19th December, she extended her contract till 30 June 2028.[22] On April 16th, she mentioned at [Viaplay](/source/Viaplay) that she has also been working as a [Scout](/source/Scout_(association_football)) for the men's team of [FC Bayern Munich](/source/FC_Bayern_Munich) since September 2025.[23] In the 2025/26 season,Eriksson successfully defended the domestic double—the German Championship and the DFB Cup—with Bayern. She contributed two goals and played a pivotal role in ensuring, that Bayern conceded only nine goals throughout the entire season.

## International career

As a [Swedish under-19 international](/source/Sweden_women's_national_under-19_football_team), Eriksson was part of the victorious squad at the [2012 U-19 European Championship](/source/2012_UEFA_Women's_Under-19_Championship).[24] In November 2013, national team coach [Pia Sundhage](/source/Pia_Sundhage) called her to a senior squad training camp at [Bosön](/source/Bos%C3%B6n).[25] Eriksson made her debut for the senior [Sweden](/source/Sweden_women's_national_football_team) team in a 3–0 [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game#Association_football) defeat by [France](/source/France_women's_national_football_team) in [Amiens](/source/Amiens) on 8 February 2014. She was part of the [Swedish squad](/source/Football_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_team_squads#Sweden) that won silver at the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/2016_Summer_Olympics).[26] Eriksson has since represented Sweden at every major tournament, namely [UEFA Women's Euro 2017](/source/UEFA_Women's_Euro_2017), [2019 FIFA Women's World Cup](/source/2019_FIFA_Women's_World_Cup),[27] [2020 Summer Olympics](/source/2020_Summer_Olympics),[28] [UEFA Women's Euro 2022](/source/UEFA_Women's_Euro_2022),[29] [2023 FIFA Women's World Cup](/source/2023_FIFA_Women's_World_Cup),[30] and [UEFA Women's Euro 2025](/source/UEFA_Women's_Euro_2025). At the 2020 Olympics, she won the [silver medal](/source/Football_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women's_tournament#Gold_medal_match) after Sweden lost to [Canada](/source/Canada_women's_national_soccer_team) in the final on [penalties](/source/Penalty_shoot-out_(association_football)).[31] In November 2025 she announced her retirement from the national team. In her statement, she explained that this was not a decision she had taken lightly, but it was one she had to make, as she was now prioritizing her body and health after some injury problems.[32][33]

## Personal life

Eriksson's mother is of Finnish descent.[34] She is openly lesbian and, since 2014, has been in a relationship with Danish international [Pernille Harder](/source/Pernille_Harder_(footballer)).[35][36][37] In July 2024, they announced their engagement after over a decade together.[38]

Eriksson and Harder work with the charity [Common Goal](/source/Common_Goal_(charity)) and pledged 1% of their salaries to help tackle social issues throughout football. The couple also both push for equality and LGBTQ+ rights in sport.[39]

During her upbringing, she assumed her last name was spelled with a C because that was how her father spelled it. When she was 17 and looked in her passport she realised it was actually spelled with a K. As such, her last name is often misspelled as "Ericsson" rather than the correct "Eriksson".[40]

Eriksson has a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree#Sweden) in [political science](/source/Political_science) and took a course in feminist theory and [intersectional](/source/Intersectionality) power analysis.[41]
