**Madi Okollo** is a district in the [West Nile region](/source/West_Nile_sub-region) of Uganda. It is located in the northern part of [Uganda](/source/Uganda) originally under [Arua District](/source/Arua_District) comprising Rigbo, Ogoko Ewang Inde town council, Rhino Camp Town council (all in lower madi) and [Okollo](/source/Okollo), Uleppi, Offaka, Anyiribu, Okollo sub-counties and Okollo Town council.[1]

## Administrative structure

**Madi Okollo** district is made up of eight [sub-counties](/source/Sub-counties_of_Uganda) forming the Upper and lower Madi constituencies. The district officially started its operations on 1st July, 2019 after being curved out from [Arua District](/source/Arua_District) with an initial budget allocation of 16 billion [Uganda Shillings](/source/Ugandan_shilling).[2]

## Population

As of 2020, the district had an estimated population of 164,200 people. The population is largely rural, with livelihoods mainly surviving on [agriculture](/source/Agriculture), trade, and small-scale economic activities.[1][2]

## Geographical location and boundaries

Madi Okollo District lies at the center of the [West Nile sub-region](/source/West_Nile_sub-region). It is bordered to the east by the [River Nile](/source/River_Nile), as well as [Amuru](/source/Amuru_District) and [Adjumani](/source/Adjumani_District) Districts. [Obongi](/source/Obongi_District) and [Yumbe](/source/Yumbe_District) Districts form its northern boundary, while [Arua](/source/Arua) and [Terego](/source/Terego_District) Districts lie to the west. To the south, the district shares borders with [Zombo](/source/Zombo_District), [Nebbi](/source/Nebbi_District), and [Pakwach](/source/Pakwach_District) Districts.[3]

## Accessibility and transport links

Madi Okollo district is accessible via the [Arua](/source/Arua_District) to [Pakwach](/source/Pakwach_District) Road. The district is located approximately 58 kilometres South East of [Arua City](/source/Arua_City), the main commercial and urban center in the West Nile region. The Madi Okollo district headquarters are about 616 kilometres from [Kampala](/source/Kampala), Uganda’s capital city, when travelling through [Pakwach](/source/Pakwach) and [Karuma](/source/Karuma). This positioning places Madi Okollo along an important transport corridor that links the West Nile region to the rest of the country.[3]
