# Madeline Held

**Madeline Held** MBE (1944, in [Corbridge](/source/Corbridge), Northumberland – 2020, in [London](/source/London)) was a British academic in the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, [London South Bank University](/source/London_South_Bank_University).[1] She had been the Director of the LLU+ (formerly the [London](/source/London) Language and Literacy Unit).[2] The unit ran the largest [professional development](/source/Professional_development) centre in the UK, undertaking capacity building for [teacher training](/source/Teacher_training) in [further](/source/Further_education), [higher](/source/Higher_education) and [community](/source/Community) [education](/source/Education).

## Awards and honours

Held was awarded an [MBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) for services to Adult Basic Skills in the [2006 New Year Honours](/source/2006_New_Year_Honours) List.[3]
