**Maconacon**, officially the **Municipality of Maconacon** ([Ibanag](/source/Ibanag_language): *Ili nat Maconacon*; [Ilocano](/source/Ilocano_language): *Ili ti Maconacon*; [Tagalog](/source/Tagalog_language)/[Kasiguranin](/source/Kasiguranin_language): *Bayan ng Maconacon*), is a [municipality](/source/Municipality_of_the_Philippines) in the [province](/source/Philippine_Province) of [Isabela](/source/Isabela_(province)), [Philippines](/source/Philippines). According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 4,252 people[6] making it the least populous municipality in the province.

## History

Maconacon was a former *barrio* of [Cabagan](/source/Cabagan). It became a separate municipality on June 21, 1969, by virtue of *Republic Act No. 5776*.[7]

In June 2009, Municipal Mayor Francisco Talosig was shot in an ambush and died after being in a coma for four months.[8] His successor, Erlinda Domingo, was also assassinated in 2013.[9]

On April 12, 2024, the town is declared an insurgency-free municipality from the influence of [CPP](/source/Communist_Party_of_the_Philippines), [NPA](/source/New_People's_Army), and [NDF](/source/National_Democratic_Front_of_the_Philippines), along with [Divilacan](/source/Divilacan).[10]

## Geography

Maconacon is one of the four coastal municipalities of the province of [Isabela](/source/Isabela_(province)) facing the [Philippine Sea](/source/Philippine_Sea) to the east. Separated from the rest of the province by the mighty Sierra Madre mountains, it is considered to be one of the most [remote and isolated community](/source/Remote_and_isolated_community) in the province.

The town is bounded to the north by [Peñablanca](/source/Pe%C3%B1ablanca) in the province of [Cagayan](/source/Cagayan), [San Pablo](/source/San_Pablo%2C_Isabela) and [Cabagan](/source/Cabagan) to the west, [Tumauini](/source/Tumauini) to the southwest, [Divilacan](/source/Divilacan) to the south and the Philippine Sea to the east.

Maconacon is situated 107.90 kilometres (67.05 mi) from the provincial capital [Ilagan](/source/Ilagan), and 533.49 kilometres (331.50 mi) from the country's capital city of [Manila](/source/Manila), via [Ilagan–Divilacan Road](/source/Ilagan%E2%80%93Divilacan_Road).

In the 2024 census, the population of Maconacon was 4,252 people,[18] with a density of 7.9 inhabitants per square kilometre or 20 inhabitants per square mile.

## Government

### Local government

As a municipality in the Province of Isabela, government officials at the provincial and municipal levels are voted by the town. The provincial government has political jurisdiction over most local transactions of the municipal government.

The Municipality of Maconacon is governed by a mayor, designated as its local chief executive, and by a municipal council as its legislative body in accordance with the Local Government Code. The mayor, vice mayor, and the municipal councilors are elected directly by the people in elections held every three years.

Barangays are also headed by elected officials: [Barangay Captain](/source/Barangay_Captain), [Barangay Council](/source/Sangguniang_Barangay), whose members are called [Barangay Councilors](/source/Barangay_Kagawad). The barangays have SK federation which represents the barangay, headed by SK chairperson and whose members are called SK councilors. All officials are also elected every three years.

Maconacon, belonging to the [first legislative district](/source/Legislative_districts_of_Isabela) of the province of Isabela, is currently represented by Antonio T. Albano.[28]

## Education

The Schools Division of Isabela governs the town's public education system.[29] The division office is a field office of the [DepEd](/source/Department_of_Education_(Philippines)) in [Cagayan Valley](/source/Cagayan_Valley).[30] The Palanan Schools District Office governs the public and private elementary and public and private high schools throughout the municipality.[31]

Maconacon is accessible via sea and air. Its primary gateway is the Maconacon Airport which connects this isolated town to the rest of the province through [Cauayan Airport](/source/Cauayan_Airport), also in [Cauayan](/source/Cauayan%2C_Isabela) and [Tuguegarao Airport](/source/Tuguegarao_Airport) in [Tuguegarao](/source/Tuguegarao).
