The team began play in 1984 when the [Greenwood Pirates](/source/Greenwood_Pirates) relocated from [Greenwood, South Carolina](/source/Greenwood%2C_South_Carolina). After the 1987 season, the team moved to [Augusta, Georgia](/source/Augusta%2C_Georgia), where they became known as the [Augusta Pirates](/source/Augusta_Pirates).

After the 1983 season, the [Savannah Braves](/source/Savannah_Braves) left [Savannah, Georgia](/source/Savannah%2C_Georgia), for [Greenville, South Carolina](/source/Greenville%2C_South_Carolina), and became the [Greenville Braves](/source/Greenville_Braves).
