One of the earliest occurrences of the surname is of Gillandres MacLeod, in 1227.<ref name="Reaney"/> There are two recognised [Scottish clan](/source/Scottish_clan)s with the surname: [Clan MacLeod](/source/Clan_MacLeod) of [Harris](/source/Harris%2C_Scotland) and [Skye](/source/Skye), and [Clan MacLeod of Lewis](/source/Clan_MacLeod_of_Lewis) and [Raasay](/source/Raasay). The earliest record of these two families, using a form of the surname ''MacLeod'', occurs in the mid 14th century.

There are also documented cases of Scottish missionaries in Canada using McLeod as an Anglicisation of the indigenous [Cree language](/source/Cree_language) name ''{{lang|cr|Mahkiyoc}}'' (meaning "the big one"), which accounts for its occurrence amongst Canadian people of Cree heritage.<ref name="McLeod">{{cite journal |last=McLead |first=Neal |title=Plains Cree Identity: Borderlands, Ambiguous Genealogies and Narrative Irony |journal=The Canadian Journal of Native Studies |year=2000 |volume=20 |issue=2 |pages=437–454 |url=http://www3.brandonu.ca/cjns/20.2/cjnsv20no1_pg437-454.pdf |access-date=18 April 2013 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170623191458/http://www3.brandonu.ca/cjns/20.2/cjnsv20no1_pg437-454.pdf |archive-date=23 June 2017 }}</ref>
