The group's origins trace back to 1981, when Manny V. In 1987 [Metro Pacific](/source/Metro_Pacific) was established as First Pacific's investment vehicle in the Philippines.

In 1998 The group made its most significant move by acquiring a controlling stake in [PLDT](/source/PLDT), the country's dominant telecommunications provider.
