The cover athlete is center fielder [Andruw Jones](/source/Andruw_Jones) of the [Atlanta Braves](/source/Atlanta_Braves). [Vin Scully](/source/Vin_Scully) is the play-by-play announcer with Dave Campbell on color commentary.

The game was preceded by *[MLB 2001](/source/MLB_2001)* and succeeded by *[MLB 2003](/source/MLB_2003)*.

The game received "generally favorable reviews" according to the [review aggregation](/source/Review_aggregator) website [Metacritic](/source/Metacritic).[2] *[GamePro](/source/GamePro)* said of the game, "Surprisingly, 989 has strengthened *MLB'*s baseball simulation, so gamers need to take that into consideration when deciding who to back in the PlayStation world series."[3][a]
