The **MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science** (**EECS**)[1] is an engineering department of the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) in [Cambridge](/source/Cambridge,_Massachusetts), [Massachusetts](/source/Massachusetts). It offers degrees of [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science), [Master of Engineering](/source/Master_of_Engineering), [Doctor of Philosophy](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy), and [Doctor of Science](/source/Doctor_of_Science).[2]

## History

The curriculum for the electrical engineering program was created in 1882, and was the first such program in the country.[3] It was initially taught by the [physics](/source/MIT_Physics_Department) faculty. In 1902, the Institute set up a separate Electrical Engineering department. The department was renamed to Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1975, to highlight the new addition of computer science to the program.[4]
