'''MCEF''' or Major [Cdk9](/source/Cdk9)-interacting [elongation factor](/source/elongation_factor) is a [transcription factor](/source/transcription_factor) related to Af4. It is the fourth member of the Af4 family (AFF) of transcription factors, involved in numerous pathologies, including [Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia](/source/Acute_Lymphoblastic_Leukemia) (ALL), abnormal [CNS](/source/Central_nervous_system) development, [breast cancer](/source/breast_cancer) and [azoospermia](/source/azoospermia).

Because it apparently interacts with the species-specific human co-factor ([P-TEFb](/source/P-TEFb)) for HIV-1 transcription, and because it can repress HIV-1 replication, MCEF (also known as AFF4 or AF5q31) may have future therapeutic uses.<ref name=Estable>{{cite journal |vauthors=Estable M, Naghavi M, Kato H, Xiao H, Qin J, Vahlne A, Roeder R |author6-link=Anders Vahlne |title=MCEF, the newest member of the AF4 family of transcription factors involved in leukemia, is a positive transcription elongation factor-b-associated protein |journal=J Biomed Sci |volume=9 |issue=3 |pages=234–245 |year=2002 |pmid=12065898 |doi=10.1007/BF02256070}}</ref>

MCEF was originally cloned and named by Mario Clemente Estable of [Ryerson University](/source/Ryerson_University), while he was a post-doctoral fellow in the laboratory of [Robert G. Roeder](/source/Robert_G._Roeder), at the [Rockefeller University](/source/Rockefeller_University).
