The '''MAPATS''' ('''man portable anti-tank system''', also a [Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_Language) word for ''[explosion](/source/explosion)'') is a [laser guided](/source/Laser_guidance), [beam riding](/source/beam_riding)<ref name="Deagel">{{cite web |url=https://www.deagel.com/Defensive%20Weapons/MAPATS/a001043 |title=MAPATS |website=Deagel.com |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303201046/http://www.deagel.com/Anti-Armor-Weapons-and-Missiles/MAPATS_a001043001.aspx |archive-date=2016-03-03}}</ref> [anti-tank guided missile](/source/anti-tank_guided_missile) (ATGM) developed by [Israel Military Industries](/source/IMI_Systems) as a possible successor to United States' [wire-guided missile](/source/wire-guided_missile), [BGM-71 TOW](/source/BGM-71_TOW). The MAPATS is sometimes nicknamed '''''Hutra''''' (in Hebrew: חוטרא) – an [Aramaic](/source/Aramaic) word for ''stick''.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.sefaria.org/Klein_Dictionary,_%D7%97%D7%95%D6%BC%D7%98%D6%B0%D7%A8%D6%B8%D7%90?lang=en|title=Klein Dictionary, חוּטְרָא|website=www.sefaria.org}}</ref>

The MAPATS can operate day or night, while the gunner must direct a [laser designator](/source/laser_designator) on the target until missile impact. First revealed in 1984, it has no trailing wire, so it can be fired over water at naval targets or from sea to land, unlike wire-guided ATGMs. The launcher has an elevation ability up to +30°.<ref name="milfac">{{Cite web|title=IMI MAPATS (Man-Portable Anti-Tank System)|url=https://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/detail.asp?smallarms_id=167|access-date=2021-04-26|website=www.militaryfactory.com|language=en-US}}</ref> Externally, the MAPATS is very similar in appearance to the [TOW 2](/source/BGM-71_TOW).<ref name="milfac"/>

== Versions ==
The newer version of the MAPATS, developed in the early 1990s, has a new [solid-propellant rocket](/source/solid-propellant_rocket) and better laser guidance. Some new warheads were developed by [Rafael Advanced Defense Systems](/source/Rafael_Advanced_Defense_Systems), including a [tandem-charge](/source/tandem-charge) [high-explosive anti-tank](/source/high-explosive_anti-tank) (HEAT), and a [high explosive](/source/high_explosive) (HE) [bunker buster](/source/bunker_buster).
