The **M2 cycleway** is a predominantly [on road](/source/Roadway) 22-kilometre-long (14 mi)[1] [cycleway](/source/Cycleway) generally aligned with the [M2 motorway](/source/M2_Hills_Motorway) in the [Hills District](/source/Hills_District%2C_New_South_Wales) of [Sydney](/source/Sydney), [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales), [Australia](/source/Australia). The north-western terminus of the cycleway is in [Glenwood](/source/Glenwood%2C_New_South_Wales) and the eastern terminus is in [North Ryde](/source/North_Ryde). As the M2 does not have a separate cycle lane or path, the cycleway comprises the breakdown lane of the roadway.[2]

## Route

M2 cycleway km 0 Glenwood (33°45′05″S 150°57′04″E / 33.7514048°S 150.951223°E / -33.7514048; 150.951223) Windsor Road cycleway M7 cycleway 6 Baulkham Hills → Windsor Road 8 Cumberland Highway / Pennant Hills Road 14 Epping 18 Macquarie University 20 Macquarie Park → A3 22 North Ryde Gore Hill and Epping Road cycleways

Cycling access was removed in 2010 during construction work to upgrade the M2. During that time, cyclists were required to use an alternate route on suburban streets that was 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) longer, steeper and slower.[3] The design of the alternative route was criticised due to safety concerns.[4] In August 2013 access was restored westbound from Delhi Road to [Windsor Road](/source/Windsor_Road). Citybound access was restored only for the section from Windsor Road to [Pennant Hills Road](/source/Pennant_Hills_Road) due to work to stabilise the embankment near the eastbound lanes at [Marsfield](/source/Marsfield).[5] There is an alternate route citybound.[6]

As a result of the construction of the [NorthConnex](/source/NorthConnex) cycleway access to the M2 both east and westbound between Pennant Hills Road and Windsor Road was removed with effect from February 2012 adding a further 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) via a detour route; with work expected to be completed by 2020.[7][8]

The M2 cycleway connects to the [M7 cycleway](/source/M7_cycleway) at [Seven Hills](/source/Seven_Hills%2C_New_South_Wales) at its north-western terminus and to the [Gore Hill and Epping Road cycleways](/source/Gore_Hill_and_Epping_Road_cycleways) at [North Ryde](/source/North_Ryde) at its eastern terminus.
