''Lythrurus'' was first proposed as a genus in 1876 by the American [ichthyologist](/source/ichthyologist) [David Starr Jordan](/source/David_Starr_Jordan) with ''Semotilus diplemia'' as its [type species](/source/type_species).<ref name = "Cof family"/> ''S. diplemia'' had been formally [described](/source/Species_description) in 1820 by the French [polymath](/source/polymath) [Constantine Samuel Rafinesque](/source/Constantine_Samuel_Rafinesque). However, ''S. diplemia'' is now regarded as a [synonym](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) of ''[Chrosomus erythrogaster](/source/Chrosomus_erythrogaster)''<ref name = "Cof genus">{{Cof genus|genus=Lythrurus|access-date=16 March 2025}}</ref> and in 1884 Jordan proposed ''Notropis lythrurus'' as the type species, this taxon is a synonym of ''Notropis umbratilis''. If ''S. diplemia'' is the type species then ''Lythrurus'' is a synonym of ''[Chrosomus](/source/Chrosomus)'' and if this taxon is a valid genus then a new name is needed for this taxon. This genus is classified within the subfamily [Pogonichthyinae](/source/Pogonichthyinae) of the family [Leuciscidae](/source/Leuciscidae).<ref name = "Cof family"/>
