# Lynne Berry

**Lynne Berry** (born 1972) is an [American](/source/American_people) writer of [children's books](/source/Children's_books),[1] including the [picture books](/source/Picture_books) *Duck Skates* from the Duck series, *The Curious Demise of a Contrary Cat*, and *What Floats in a Moat*.

## Biography

Berry grew up in [Sudbury, Massachusetts](/source/Sudbury,_Massachusetts) and attended [Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School](/source/Lincoln-Sudbury_Regional_High_School), where she won the Frank Heys Memorial Award that recognizes "genuine intellectual curiosity and accomplishment, dedication to the fine and applied arts, and a caring belief in people."[2]

She then spent two years at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) and two years at [Wellesley College](/source/Wellesley_College), graduating with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in Biology in 1994. Berry received a [PhD](/source/PhD) in [Cell Biology](/source/Cell_Biology) from [Vanderbilt University](/source/Vanderbilt_University) in 1997.[3]

In the early 2000s, Berry had several short poems published in *[Ladybug](/source/Ladybug_(magazine))* magazine.[4] In October 2005, her first [picture book](/source/Picture_book), *Duck Skates* was published by [Henry Holt and Company](/source/Henry_Holt_and_Company) through their Holt Books for Young Readers imprint. *Duck Skates*, illustrated by Hiroe Nakata, is the first of what is currently a 4-book series.[5]

In 2006, [Simon & Schuster](/source/Simon_%26_Schuster) published *The Curious Demise of a Contrary Cat*, illustrated by Luke LaMarca.[6] [Simon & Schuster](/source/Simon_%26_Schuster) has since published *What Floats in a Moat* – illustrated by [Matthew Cordell](/source/Matthew_Cordell) – in 2013 and has Berry's *Pig and Pug* – illustrated by [Gemma Correll](/source/Gemma_Correll) – in development for publication in June 2015.[7]
