**Lyndel Rowe** is an [Australian](/source/Australians) actress of stage, television and film, who is best known for her work with the [Melbourne Theatre Company](/source/Melbourne_Theatre_Company), the [Sydney Theatre Company](/source/Sydney_Theatre_Company) and the [State Theatre Company of South Australia](/source/State_Theatre_Company_of_South_Australia), and for her role as Karen Fox/Hamilton in the television soap opera *[Sons and Daughters](/source/Sons_and_Daughters_(Australian_TV_series))*.

## Career

### Theatre

Rowe joined the Union Repertory Company (now the [Melbourne Theatre Company](/source/Melbourne_Theatre_Company)), in productions including [Patrick White](/source/Patrick_White)'s *[The Season at Sarsaparilla](/source/The_Season_at_Sarsaparilla)*, *[Waltz of the Toreadors](/source/Waltz_of_the_Toreadors)*, *[Arms and the Man](/source/Arms_and_the_Man)*, *[Ghost Train](/source/The_Ghost_Train_(play))* and toured Australia with [J.C. Williamson](/source/J.C._Williamson)'s production of *Goodnight Mrs. Puffin* (by [Arthur Lovegrove](/source/Arthur_Lovegrove)), alongside [Irene Handl](/source/Irene_Handl).

Travelling to England, she studied at the [Royal Court Theatre](/source/Royal_Court_Theatre), with [George Devine](/source/George_Devine) and [Keith Johnstone](/source/Keith_Johnstone). She performed in a production of *Painting on Wood* with the International Theatre Company of The Seventh Seal. From there she moved into repertory and into the company of a West End lunch-time theatre, TheatreScope, doing weekly seasons of one act works by playwrights such as [Tennessee Williams](/source/Tennessee_Williams), Ionesco and [Anouilh](/source/Jean_Anouilh).

In 1976, Rowe starred in the miniseries *[Tandarra](/source/Tandarra)* for which she won a [Logie Award](/source/Logie_Award) for her role as Lizzy. Her best-known television role however, was that of Karen Fox (later Hamilton) in the [Grundy’s](/source/Reg_Grundy_Organisation) soap opera *[Sons and Daughters](/source/Sons_and_Daughters_(Australian_TV_series))* for 73 episodes, from 1984 to 1985. In 1985, she also starred in the feature film *[Short Changed](/source/Short_Changed)* and the following year, appeared in children's film *[Playing Beattie Bow](/source/Playing_Beatie_Bow_(film))* based on the novel by [Ruth Park](/source/Ruth_Park).

Rowe played French opera singer [Blanche Marchesi](/source/Blanche_Marchesi) in the 1988 biographical miniseries *[Melba](/source/Melba_(miniseries))* about famed opera soprano [Dame Nellie Melba](/source/Nellie_Melba), and Anne McClelland in the 1988 children's TV movie *[Touch the Sun: Princess Kate](/source/Touch_the_Sun_(TV_series))*, alongside [Justine Clarke](/source/Justine_Clarke) and [Claudia Karvan](/source/Claudia_Karvan).
