# Lynd River

The **Lynd River** is a river located on the [Cape York Peninsula](/source/Cape_York_Peninsula) in the [Shire of Mareeba](/source/Shire_of_Mareeba) in [Far North Queensland](/source/Far_North_Queensland), Australia.[3]

## Course and features

The headwaters of the river rise in the [Forty Mile Scrub National Park](/source/Forty_Mile_Scrub_National_Park) in the [Great Dividing Range](/source/Great_Dividing_Range) and flows in a north westerly direction. It flows down the range and onto the plains of the [Gulf Country](/source/Gulf_Country) past [cattle stations](/source/Cattle_station) such Torwood, The Lake outstation and Bulimba. Continuing north it discharges into the [Mitchell River](/source/Mitchell_River_(Queensland)) near [Staaten River National Park](/source/Staaten_River_National_Park). From source to [mouth](/source/River_mouth), the Lynd River is joined by twenty [tributaries](/source/Tributary) including the [Tate River](/source/Tate_River), descending 647 metres (2,123 ft) over its 323-kilometre (201-mile) [course](/source/Watercourse).[2] In its upper reaches, the river is crossed by the [Kennedy Highway](/source/Kennedy_Highway).

The Mitchell River Fan Aggregation, a 7,149-square kilometre (2,760-square mile) freshwater wetland area located approximately south east of [Kowanyama](/source/Kowanyama), is fed by the [Mitchell](/source/Mitchell_River_(Queensland)), [Palmer](/source/Palmer_River_(Queensland)) and Lynd Rivers.[4]

[Riparian](/source/Riparian) vegetation found along the river include *[Melaleuca fluviatilis](/source/Melaleuca_fluviatilis)*, *[Casuarina cunninghamiana](/source/Casuarina_cunninghamiana)*, *[Pandanus spiralis](/source/Pandanus_spiralis)* and *[Ficus racemosa](/source/Ficus_racemosa)* which provide most of the cover.[5]

The [traditional owners](/source/Traditional_owners) of the upper catchment area are the [Kunjen](/source/Kunjen_language) peoples.[6]

## Etymology

The river was named in 1844 in honour of Lieutenant Robert Lynd of the 63rd Regiment of the British Army by [Ludwig Leichhardt](/source/Ludwig_Leichhardt) during Leichhardt's expedition from Queensland to [Port Essington](/source/Port_Essington). Lynd was a benefactor of Leichhardt's, and assisted him both socially and financially.[1][7] [William Hann](/source/William_Hann) also passed through the area as part of his 1872 expedition camping along the river before moving on to the Palmer River.[8]
