[Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as Lyell Butte rises {{convert|2,800|ft}} above the [Colorado River](/source/Colorado_River) in 1.5 mile (2.4 km). Access is via the [Tonto Trail](/source/Tonto_Trail) which traverses the base of the peak. Lyell Butte is composed of [Mississippian](/source/Mississippian_(geology)) [Redwall Limestone](/source/Redwall_Limestone), with a dome of the basal layer of [Pennsylvanian](/source/Pennsylvanian_(geology))-[Permian](/source/Permian) [Supai Group](/source/Supai_Group) on top which dips to the northeast.<ref>N.H.
