***Lycosa aragogi*** is a species of the [araneomorph](/source/Araneomorphae) [spider](/source/Spider) family [Lycosidae](/source/Wolf_spiders)[1] [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [Kerman province](/source/Kerman_province), Iran.[2] The female [holotype](/source/Holotype) measured 26mm, (excluding the legs), with two black and three white stripes of [setae](/source/Setae) on its [cephalothorax](/source/Cephalothorax), black setae on its [chelicerae](/source/Chelicerae), and scattered dots and patterns of black and white setae on its abdomen.[2][3]

## Discovery and naming

This species was named after [Aragog](/source/Aragog), the fictional spider from the *[Harry Potter](/source/Harry_Potter)* series by [J.K. Rowling](/source/J.K._Rowling),[4] as it resembled the animatronic puppet version of this character created for the movie *[Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets](/source/Harry_Potter_and_the_Chamber_of_Secrets_(film))*.[2] Another reason for this [eponymy](/source/Eponymy) was the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the whole *Harry Potter* series in 2017.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The single specimen was collected by Iranian [entomologist](/source/Entomologist) [Alireza Naderi](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alireza_Naderi&action=edit&redlink=1) in a mountainous region of southeastern Iran's Kerman province on 26 April 2016, just over 19 years after Aragog died (20 April 1997, according to the *Harry Potter* series), and later described by [arachnologists](/source/Arachnologists) Anton Nadolny and Alireza Zamani in a paper published in the journal *[Zootaxa](/source/Zootaxa)*.[3]
