Place in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

Lurg Lorg[1] (Irish) Location of Lurg, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Sovereign state United Kingdom Country Northern Ireland County Fermanagh

**Lurg** (from [Irish](/source/Irish_language) *Lorg* 'mark, trail or track'[1]) is a [barony](/source/Barony_(Ireland)) situated in the north of [County Fermanagh](/source/County_Fermanagh), [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland).[2] To its south lies [Lower Lough Erne](/source/Lough_Erne), and it is bordered by four other baronies in Northern Ireland: [Magheraboy](/source/Magheraboy) to the south; [Tirkennedy](/source/Tirkennedy) to the south-east; [Omagh West](/source/Omagh_West) to the north; and [Omagh East](/source/Omagh_East) to the east.[2] It also borders to the west the barony of [Tirhugh](/source/Tirhugh) in the [Republic of Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland).

## History

The barony of Lurg is based on the ancient Irish territory of *Tuath Luirg*, also known as *Fir Luirg* (the men of Lurg),[3] who are claimed to be genealogically related to the [Airgialla](/source/Airgialla).[1] This territory was the patrimonial inheritance of the O'Muldoon ([Irish](/source/Irish_language): *Ó Maoldúin*). It is listed in the Annals, under the name *Lorg*, as being a kingdom in the year 1039.[1][3]

Prior to this, Lurg was the base of the O'Monaghan ([Irish](/source/Irish_language): *Ó Manacháin*), thought to be descended from the original inhabitants of the area, the *Fir Manach*, from which [County Fermanagh](/source/County_Fermanagh) gets its name.[4][5]

According to 19th century genealogist [John O'Hart](/source/John_O'Hart), the barony was also home to the [Muintir Taithligh](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Muintir_Taithligh&action=edit&redlink=1) "chiefs of Hy-Laoghaire, of Lough Lir, a district which lay in the barony of Lurg, near [Lough Erne](/source/Lough_Erne), towards Tyrone."[6]

O'Hart also notes that the lord of Lurg in A.D. 924, Fergus MacDuilgen, is listed in the [Annals of the Four Masters](/source/Annals_of_the_Four_Masters), although not chronicled in the lists of families and clans of the scholar poet [Seán Mór Ó Dubhagáin](/source/Se%C3%A1n_M%C3%B3r_%C3%93_Dubhag%C3%A1in).[6]
