# Luiche

**Luis García Martínez** (20 August 1940 – 22 July 2024), commonly known as **Luiche**, was a Spanish [football](/source/Association_football) [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) and player who played as a [right-back](/source/Right-back).

## Career

Born in [Alicante](/source/Alicante) and raised in [Villena](/source/Villena), both in the [Valencian Community](/source/Valencian_Community), Luiche's professional inputs as a player consisted of 11 [Segunda División](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n) matches with [CF Calvo Sotelo](/source/CF_Calvo_Sotelo) in the [1965–66 season](/source/1965%E2%80%9366_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n). During his playing career, he also represented [Villena CF](/source/Villena_CF) (two stints), CD Monóvar, [UD Oliva](/source/UD_Oliva), [SD Ibiza](/source/SD_Ibiza), [CD Eldense](/source/CD_Eldense), [Villarreal CF](/source/Villarreal_CF) and [CD Benicarló](/source/CD_Benicarl%C3%B3) before retiring in 1974 at the age of 32.[1]

Immediately after retiring Luiche took up coaching, being in charge of local side UD Petrelense. After managing [Santa Pola CF](/source/Santa_Pola_CF) and [AP Almansa](/source/AP_Almansa), he first arrived in [Segunda División B](/source/Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B), in charge of a club he represented as a player, Eldense.[2]

In 1986, after spells at [Albacete Balompié](/source/Albacete_Balompi%C3%A9), [Yeclano CF](/source/Yeclano_CF), Eldense, [CD Alcoyano](/source/CD_Alcoyano) and [CF Nules](/source/CF_Nules),[3] Luiche was appointed manager of Villarreal in [Tercera División](/source/Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n). After achieving promotion with the latter in [his first season](/source/1986%E2%80%9387_Tercera_Divisi%C3%B3n) and narrowly missing out promotion in [his second](/source/1987%E2%80%9388_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B), he took over [CD Castellón](/source/CD_Castell%C3%B3n) in the second division.

Luiche achieved promotion to [La Liga](/source/La_Liga) with Castellón in [1989](/source/1988%E2%80%9389_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n), and remained in charge of the club until April 1991; despite being replaced by [Lucien Muller](/source/Lucien_Muller), the club still suffered relegation at the end of [the campaign](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_La_Liga). In June 1991, he was named manager of [CE Sabadell FC](/source/CE_Sabadell_FC) in the second level,[4] but was sacked in October after only one win in six matches.[5]

Luiche then worked at [Cartagena FC](/source/Cartagena_FC) before returning to Castellón in February 1994, but being unable to avoid the club's [relegation from the second division](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n). After suffering another drop at Alcoyano in [1995–96](/source/1995%E2%80%9396_Segunda_Divisi%C3%B3n_B), he subsequently managed [Novelda CF](/source/Novelda_CF) also in division three.

## Legacy

In May 2012, the city of Villena named their new stadium after Luiche.[6]

## Death

Luiche died on 23 July 2024, at the age of 82.[7]
