# Lugalo

**Lugalo** is a village in [Tanzania](/source/Tanzania) near [Iringa](/source/Iringa) which in 1891 was the site of a battle in which a [German colonial](/source/German_East_Africa) military force under [Emil von Zelewski](/source/Emil_von_Zelewski) was decisively defeated and almost annihilated by the [Hehe](/source/Hehe_people) army of [Chief Mkwawa](/source/Chief_Mkwawa).[1] This was the first major defeat for the German [Schutztruppe](/source/Schutztruppe) and the beginning of the Hehe wars.

A German monument marks the site next to the modern [TANZAM highway](/source/Tanzam_Highway).[2]
