# Ludwig Held

**Ludwig Held** (14 April 1837 – 2 March 1900), resident in Vienna from the 1860s, was a theatre critic and [librettist](/source/Libretto), writing libretti for operettas by [Carl Zeller](/source/Carl_Zeller) and [Franz von Suppé](/source/Franz_von_Supp%C3%A9).

## Life

Held, born in [Regensburg](/source/Regensburg), lived in Vienna from the 1860s, where he was secretary of the [Theater an der Wien](/source/Theater_an_der_Wien), at that time under the management of [Maximilian Steiner](/source/Maximilian_Steiner). In 1873 he became theatre critic for *[Neues Wiener Tagblatt](/source/Neues_Wiener_Tagblatt)*.[1][2]

Held wrote popular farces, and song lyrics for famous actresses including [Josefine Gallmeyer](/source/Josefine_Gallmeyer) and [Marie Geistinger](/source/Marie_Geistinger). He collaborated with [Moritz West](/source/Moritz_West) to write libretti for operettas by [Carl Zeller](/source/Carl_Zeller), including *[Der Vogelhändler](/source/Der_Vogelh%C3%A4ndler)* and *[The Mine Foreman](/source/The_Mine_Foreman_(operetta))*; with [Viktor Léon](/source/Viktor_L%C3%A9on) he wrote libretti for operettas by [Franz von Suppé](/source/Franz_von_Supp%C3%A9).[1][2]

He continued as a theatre critic until his death in Vienna in 1900.[2]

## Family

He married in 1870 Adele Ehn (1843–1880); they had four sons, including Hugo Held (1872–1936), an actor and writer, and [Leo Held](/source/Leo_Held) (1874–1903), a conductor and composer.[2]
