Most of the species are [native to caves](/source/Cavefish) and [sinkhole](/source/sinkhole)s in [Cuba](/source/Cuba) and [the Bahamas](/source/the_Bahamas); ''L. inopinata'' from deep water off the [Galápagos Islands](/source/Gal%C3%A1pagos_Islands) is the only exception. The four species rated by the [IUCN](/source/IUCN) are all considered [vulnerable](/source/Vulnerable_species).
