The **Lucha Underground Trios Championship** was a [professional wrestling](/source/Professional_wrestling) [world tag team](/source/World_Tag_Team_Championship) [championship](/source/Championship_(professional_wrestling)) promoted by [Lucha Underground](/source/Lucha_Underground). In contrast to usual [tag team](/source/Tag_team) championships for two wrestlers, it is exclusively for three-man tag teams, also known as *trios* in *[Lucha libre](/source/Lucha_libre)*. The titles were announced by the storyline owner of Lucha Underground, Dario Cueto on a show that aired on January 25, 2015, followed by a *trios* tournament that played out over several episodes of *Lucha Underground*. The final champions were The Reptile Tribe ([Kobra Moon](/source/Thunder_Rosa), [Daga](/source/Daga_(wrestler)) & [Jeremiah Snake](/source/Sami_Callihan)).

As it was a professional wrestling championship, the championship was not won not by actual competition, but by a [scripted ending](/source/Kayfabe) to a match determined by the [bookers and match makers](/source/Booker_(professional_wrestling)).[a] On occasion the promotion declares a championship vacant, which means there is no champion then. This can either be due to a storyline,[b] or real-life issues such as a champion suffering an injury being unable to defend the championship,[c] or leaving the company.[d]

## History

During Season 1's episode 20 ("The Art of War") storyline owner Dario Cueto announced that he was honoring the *[lucha libre](/source/Lucha_libre)* tradition of the *[Trios](/source/Professional_wrestling_tag_team_match_types#Trios_rules_(Relevos_Australianos))* teams as he introduced the Lucha Underground Trios Championship and announced that the [Trios title tournament](/source/Lucha_Underground_tournaments#Lucha_Underground_Trios_Championship_Tournament_(2015)) would start on the following show.[5] On Episode 21 ("Uno! Dos! Tres!") the team of [Big Ryck](/source/Ezekiel_Jackson), [Killshot](/source/Shane_Strickland) & [Willie Mack](/source/Willie_Mack) defeated the team of [Pentagón Jr.](/source/Pentag%C3%B3n_Jr.), [Sexy Star](/source/Sexy_Star) & [Super Fly](/source/Super_Fly_(wrestler)).[6] The following week the dysfunctional team of [Angélico](/source/Ang%C3%A9lico), [Ivelisse](/source/Ivelisse_V%C3%A9lez) & [Son of Havoc](/source/Matt_Cross_(wrestler)) defeated [Aero Star](/source/Aero_Star), [Drago](/source/Drago_(wrestler)) & [Fénix](/source/F%C3%A9nix_(wrestler)) to earn a spot in the finals.[7] In the third week (S1E23 "Fire in the Cosmos") of the tournament Dario Cueto hand-picked the team of [King Cuerno](/source/Hijo_del_Fantasma), [Cage](/source/Brian_Cage) & [El Texano Jr.](/source/El_Texano_Jr.) defeated [Lucha Underground Champion](/source/Lucha_Underground_Championship) [Prince Puma](/source/Ricochet_(wrestler)), [Johnny Mundo](/source/John_Morrison_(wrestler)) & [Hernandez](/source/Hernandez_(wrestler)) to earn the third and final spot in the finals.[8] Episode 24, named "Trios Champions" was dedicated almost exclusively to the finals of the Trios tournament. Angélico, Ivelisse & Son of Havoc won the three-way match, which was believed to be the finals. After the match was over Dario Cueto announced that it was only the semi-finals and that the winners had to face "The Crew" ([Bael](/source/B-Boy_(wrestler)), Mr. Cisco & [Cortez Castro](/source/Ricky_Reyes)) for the championship. The dysfunctional, yet popular team of Angélico, Ivelisse & Son of Havoc won the match, becoming the first holders of the Trios Championship.[9] On the May 24, 2015 episode of *Lucha Underground* (Episode 28 *Shoots and Ladders*) the champions were forced to defend the Trios championship against the Crew despite Ivelisse being injured and in a cast. The match was a [Ladder match](/source/Ladder_match) and ended with Ivelisse climbing the ladder despite her injury to claim the belts and a successful title defense.[10] On Episode 30 ("Submit to the Master") the champions had another successful title defense, defeating the team of [Big Ryck](/source/Ezekiel_Jackson), [Cage](/source/Brian_Cage) & [Delavar Daivari](/source/Shawn_Daivari).[11] Angélico, Ivelisse & Son of Havoc lost the Trios championship to The Disciples of Death ([Barrio Negro](/source/Argenis_(wrestler)), [El Sinestro de la Muerte](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mariachi_Loco&action=edit&redlink=1) & [Trece](/source/Ricky_Mandel)) as part of the end of the season *[Ultima Lucha](/source/Ultima_Lucha_(season_1))* special event. The show was taped on April 19, 2015, and aired for the first time on July 29, 2015.[12]
