**Luca Bucci** (Italian pronunciation: [\[ˈluːka ˈbuttʃi\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Italian); born 13 March 1969) is an Italian former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)). Bucci played for several Italian clubs throughout his career; he is mostly remembered for his choice of unusual shirt numbers and successful spell with [Parma](/source/Parma_AC), where he won various domestic and European titles. At international level, he represented the [Italy national team](/source/Italy_national_football_team) and was an unused member of the team that reached the [1994 FIFA World Cup final](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup_final), as well as a reserve at [UEFA Euro 1996](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996).

## Club career

Born in [Bologna](/source/Bologna), Bucci spent a few years in [the third](/source/Serie_C1) and [second levels](/source/Serie_B) (winning the [1992–93 Serie B title](/source/1992%E2%80%9393_Serie_B) with [Reggiana](/source/AC_Reggiana)). He made his [Serie A](/source/Serie_A) debut playing for [Parma](/source/Parma_AC), in a league match against [Udinese](/source/Udinese_Calcio) on 29 August 1993. He soon achieved prominence during a particularly successful stint with the club, winning an [UEFA Supercup](/source/UEFA_Supercup) in 1993, and an [UEFA Cup](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_UEFA_Cup) in 1995; he also received runners-up medals in the [Coppa Italia](/source/1994%E2%80%9395_Coppa_Italia), in the [Cup Winners' Cup](/source/1993%E2%80%9394_European_Cup_Winners'_Cup), in the [Supercoppa Italiana](/source/1995_Supercoppa_Italiana), and in [Serie A](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_Serie_A) with the club. Bucci was the starting keeper for Parma when they won the UEFA cup in 1995. At Parma, however, Bucci was soon overtaken by the emergence of 18-year-old *Primavera* keeper [Gianluigi Buffon](/source/Gianluigi_Buffon) during the [1996–97 season](/source/1996%E2%80%9397_Serie_A). Bucci started the season as the starting keeper for the first seven games. After a dispute with coach [Carlo Ancelotti](/source/Carlo_Ancelotti) and emergence of Buffon, Bucci left the team in order to play more regularly.[2][3]

After playing six months for [Perugia](/source/AC_Perugia), Bucci joined second-tier [Torino](/source/Torino_Calcio) in 1997, later gaining promotion to Serie A throughout his time with the Turin club after winning the [2000–01 Serie B](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_Serie_B) title with the club, and remaining with the *granata* for six seasons, until his contract expired. He then decided to join [Empoli](/source/Empoli_FC). However, he only managed to play in half of the games, while the club was [eventually relegated](/source/2003%E2%80%9304_Serie_A), with Bucci leaving at the end of season.[2][3]

After six months without a club, Bucci moved back to Parma in January 2005 to replace [Gianluca Berti](/source/Gianluca_Berti) who left for Torino,[4] initially as a reserve goalkeeper. He was the first choice after [Sébastien Frey](/source/S%C3%A9bastien_Frey)’s departure, ahead of [Cristiano Lupatelli](/source/Cristiano_Lupatelli) and [Matteo Guardalben](/source/Matteo_Guardalben) in the 2005–06 season, [Alfonso De Lucia](/source/Alfonso_De_Lucia) and [Fabio Virgili](/source/Fabio_Virgili) in the 2006–07 season, [Nicola Pavarini](/source/Nicola_Pavarini) and [Radek Petr](/source/Radek_Petr) in the 2007–08 season. After Parma's relegated he was released in June 2008.[2][3]

After another seven months as a free agent, he joined [Napoli](/source/SSC_Napoli), following an injury crisis that hit the club.[5] He made his debut with Napoli on 19 April, in a 2–0 away loss to [Cagliari](/source/Cagliari_Calcio),[6] becoming the fifth goalkeeper to be used by the *azzurri* in the 2008–09 season (the other four being [Gennaro Iezzo](/source/Gennaro_Iezzo), [Nicolás Navarro](/source/Nicol%C3%A1s_Navarro_(Argentine_footballer)), [Matteo Gianello](/source/Matteo_Gianello) and [Luigi Sepe](/source/Luigi_Sepe)).[3][7]

## International career

[Uncapped](/source/Cap_(football)), Bucci was called by [Italy](/source/Italy_national_football_team) manager [Arrigo Sacchi](/source/Arrigo_Sacchi) as Italy's third goalkeeper for the [1994 FIFA World Cup](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup) in the United States, behind [Gianluca Pagliuca](/source/Gianluca_Pagliuca) and [Luca Marchegiani](/source/Luca_Marchegiani), making no appearances. Italy finished the tournament in second place, after losing on penalties in the [final](/source/1994_FIFA_World_Cup_Final) against [Brazil](/source/Brazil_national_football_team). He would make his full debut on 21 December of that year, appearing in a 3–1 friendly win over [Turkey](/source/Turkey_national_football_team). He was also a back-up goalkeeper for Italy at [UEFA Euro 1996](/source/UEFA_Euro_1996). In total, Bucci made three senior appearances for Italy between 1994 and 1996.[8]

## Style of play

In spite of his relatively short stature for a goalkeeper,[9] Bucci was a reliable and physically strong keeper,[10] who was known for his consistency, athleticism, explosiveness, agility, and acrobatic style of play;[10][11] although he had a reserved character, he was a confident and resolute goalkeeper,[12][13][14][15] with a strong temper, who often stood out for his instinctive and aggressive playing style.[3][16] Considered to be one of the best Italian goalkeepers of his generation,[12] throughout his career, he was highly regarded for his speed when rushing off his line to anticipate strikers outside the area who had beaten the offside trap, and for his ability to get to ground quickly to collect or parry the ball,[17][18] and was also effective at stopping penalties.[13] Furthermore, Bucci was highly competent with the ball at his feet, and often functioned as a [sweeper-keeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)#Sweeper-keeper) in teams which relied on a [zonal marking](/source/Zonal_marking) system and high defensive lines. Due to his distribution, he was also capable of starting plays and launching attacks from the back.[10][12][17][19][20] Bucci also stood out for his longevity.[21][22]

## Post-playing career

After the 2008–09 season, Bucci decided to retire from professional football and became a youth team goalkeeper coach at [Parma](/source/Parma_FC).[3][23] In 2015, he joined [Bologna](/source/Bologna_FC_1909) as the club's goalkeeping coach, under his former Parma manager [Roberto Donadoni](/source/Roberto_Donadoni).[24]
