A regular collaborator in ''[The Journal](/source/The_Journal_(France))'', with [Jules Renard](/source/Jules_Renard), [Alphonse Allais](/source/Alphonse_Allais), [Octave Mirbeau](/source/Octave_Mirbeau), he was the first reader of the proofs of the 1913 novel ''[Swann's Way](/source/Swann's_Way)'' by his friend [Marcel Proust](/source/Marcel_Proust) and dissuaded Proust to shorten it.
Robert's novel ''Le Roman du malade'', serialized in ''[Le Figaro](/source/Le_Figaro)'' newspaper and then published by the {{ill|Éditions Fasquelle|fr}}, won the 1911 Prix Femina. The novel was admired by the writers [Maurice Barres](/source/Maurice_Barres), [Anna de Noailles](/source/Anna_de_Noailles), [Robert de Montesquiou](/source/Robert_de_Montesquiou) and [Colette](/source/Colette).

Having fallen in love with Jeanne Humbert, thirty years younger, they married at the town hall of [Sannois](/source/Sannois) on 8 November 1928. She survived him for more than half a century and published her autobiography, ''Le cœur a ses raisons'', in 1986, on [vanity press](/source/vanity_press).
