# Louis de Champsavin

**Louis Marie Joseph Le Beschu de Champsavin** (24 November 1867 – 20 December 1916) was a French [military officer](/source/Military_officer) and [horse rider](/source/Equestrianism).

## Personal life

Champsavin was born in [Assérac](/source/Ass%C3%A9rac) on 24 November 1867. In 1894, he married Amelie Clemence.[1]

Champsavin was appointed a Chevalier of the [Légion d'honneur](/source/L%C3%A9gion_d'honneur) and Chevalier of the [Order of Agricultural Merit](/source/Order_of_Agricultural_Merit).[1][2]

## Military career

Champsavin began his military education at [École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr](/source/%C3%89cole_sp%C3%A9ciale_militaire_de_Saint-Cyr) in 1887. From there he went to the [Saumur Cavalry School](/source/Saumur_Cavalry_School). On graduating he joined the 24th Dragoon Regiment in 1891 as [sub-lieutenant](/source/Sub-lieutenant). He was promoted to [lieutenant](/source/Lieutenant) in 1892.

Between 1899 and 1903, he was a riding instructor at Saint-Cyr. He was promoted to [captain](/source/Captain_(armed_forces)) in 1903, and [chef d'escadron](/source/Chef_d'escadron) in 1913.

During [World War I](/source/World_War_I) Champsavin led the 20th Cavalry Regiment and came to command Fort Tavannes during the [Battle of Verdun](/source/Battle_of_Verdun). The many gas shells that fell on the fort during this time caused his health to deteriorate, and he died in hospital in [Nantes](/source/Nantes) on 20 December 1916.[3] He was awarded the [Croix de Guerre](/source/Croix_de_guerre_1914%E2%80%931918_(France)).[1][2]

## Equestrian

In May and June 1900, Champsavin competed in the International Horse Show in Paris. The events were part of the [Exposition Universelle](/source/Exposition_Universelle_(1900)), and later classified as part of the [1900 Summer Olympics](/source/1900_Summer_Olympics). Aboard his horse, *Terpsichore*, he finished third in the [jumping event](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1900_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Individual_jumping), and was among the rosette winners outside the leading places in the [hacks and hunter event](/source/Equestrian_at_the_1900_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Hacks_and_hunter_combined).[4][5]
