# Louis Schaefer

**Louis J. Schaefer** (December 27, 1907 – August 8, 1988) was an American jockey and trainer in [Thoroughbred horse racing](/source/Thoroughbred_horse_race) best known for winning the [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes), [second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown](/source/United_States_Triple_Crown_of_Thoroughbred_Racing) series, both as a [jockey](/source/Jockey) and as a [trainer](/source/Horse_trainer).[1]

Schaefer rode [Dr. Freeland](/source/Dr._Freeland) to victory in the 1929 Preakness Stakes. He continued to ride into 1936 when he was hired by [William L. Brann](/source/William_L._Brann) to take over as train for his racing stable in 1937. Louis Schaefer trained [Challedon](/source/Challedon) to win the 1939 Preakness and went on to earn [American Horse of the Year](/source/American_Horse_of_the_Year) honors for that year.[2]

A resident of [Uniondale, New York](/source/Uniondale,_New_York), in his latter years Louis Schaefer owned a bar and grill across the street from the old [Jamaica Race Course](/source/Jamaica_Race_Course). On August 8, 1988, he died of a [heart attack](/source/Heart_attack) at age 80 in a [Hempstead, New York](/source/Hempstead,_New_York) hospital.[3]
