**Louis Hopewell Bauer** (July 18, 1888 – February 2, 1964)[2][3] was an American medical doctor who founded the [Aerospace Medical Association](/source/Aerospace_Medical_Association) in 1929.[4] Bauer was the first medical director of the Aeronautics Branch of the [Department of Commerce](/source/United_States_Department_of_Commerce) which became the [Federal Aviation Administration](/source/Federal_Aviation_Administration) (FAA).

## Career

He was [Commandant](/source/Commandant) of the [School of Aviation Medicine](/source/School_of_Aviation_Medicine) between 1919 and 1925. During 1926, he established a medical section in the [Bureau of Air Commerce](/source/Bureau_of_Air_Commerce), [Department of Commerce](/source/Department_of_Commerce). On October 7, 1929, the [Aero Medical Association of the United States](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aero_Medical_Association_of_the_United_States&action=edit&redlink=1) was founded by Bauer.[5]

He also founded the [Journal of Aviation Medicine](/source/Journal_of_Aviation_Medicine), the predecessor of the present [Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine journal](/source/Aviation%2C_Space%2C_and_Environmental_Medicine_journal). The first issue of this Journal was published in March, 1930.[3] Bauer was the Journal's editor for 25 years.[6]

Bauer was [President](/source/President_(corporate_title)) and [Chairman](/source/Chairman) of the [American Medical Association](/source/American_Medical_Association) and leader of the [World Medical Association](/source/World_Medical_Association).[7]

## Personal life

He was married to Helena Meredith Bauer who was a social worker with the [Massachusetts General Hospital](/source/Massachusetts_General_Hospital). Together they had a son, [Charles Theodore Bauer](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Theodore_Bauer&action=edit&redlink=1), who was born on March 3, 1919. He was [Co-Founder](/source/Entrepreneur) and the [Chairman](/source/Chairman) of [AIM Management Group](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=AIM_Management_Group&action=edit&redlink=1).[7]

## Louis Bauer Award

The Louis Bauer Award is awarded by the [Aerospace Medical Association](/source/Aerospace_Medical_Association). It is given in honour of Bauer, who was the founder of the AMA. It is awarded annually "for the most significant contribution in aerospace medicine".[8]
