Born in [Saint-Ours](/source/Saint-Ours%2C_Quebec), [Canada East](/source/Canada_East), Coderre's spent his early career practising as a lawyer. A [Conservative](/source/Conservative_Party_of_Canada_(historical)), he unsuccessfully ran in the [1908 federal election](/source/1908_Canadian_federal_election) in the Quebec riding of [Hochelaga](/source/Hochelaga_(electoral_district)). He ran again in Hochelaga in the [1911 federal election](/source/1911_Canadian_federal_election), defeating MP [Louis-Alfred-Adhémar Rivet](/source/Louis-Alfred-Adh%C3%A9mar_Rivet).

From 1912 to 1915, Coderre was the [secretary of state for Canada](/source/List_of_Secretaries_of_State_for_Canada). He also served as the [minister of mines](/source/Minister_of_Mines_(Canada)) from 1913 to 1915.
