==History==
He was the son of [George Thomas Nicholson](/source/George_Thomas_Nicholson) and his wife Anne Elizabeth Smith, daughter of [William Smith](/source/William_Smith_(abolitionist)). Educated at Mr Malleson's School in [Hove](/source/Hove) and at the [Royal Military Academy, Woolwich](/source/Royal_Military_Academy%2C_Woolwich), Nicholson was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) into the [Royal Corps of Engineers](/source/Royal_Corps_of_Engineers) in 1846. In 1855 he was sent to the [Crimean War](/source/Crimean_War) where he took part in the [Siege of Sevastopol](/source/Siege_of_Sevastopol_(1854%E2%80%931855)).<ref name="odnb">{{cite ODNB|id=20144|first=Roger T.|last=Stearn|title=Nicholson, Sir Lothian}}</ref>

He was appointed to command the Royal Engineers in the [London](/source/London) District in 1861 and then the Royal Engineers in [Gibraltar](/source/Gibraltar) from 1868.<ref name=odnb/> Later that year he became Assistant Adjutant-General for the Royal Engineers in [Ireland](/source/Ireland).<ref name=odnb/>
