'''''Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13''''' (published in [paperback](/source/paperback) as '''''Apollo 13''''') is a 1994 non-fiction book by astronaut [Jim Lovell](/source/Jim_Lovell) and journalist [Jeffrey Kluger](/source/Jeffrey_Kluger), about the failed April 1970 [Apollo 13](/source/Apollo_13) lunar landing mission which Lovell commanded. The book is the basis of the 1995 film adaptation ''[Apollo 13](/source/Apollo_13_(film))'', directed by [Ron Howard](/source/Ron_Howard) and starring [Tom Hanks](/source/Tom_Hanks) as Lovell.

Lovell was initially approached by Kluger in 1991 about collaborating on the book. [Fred Haise](/source/Fred_Haise) was not interested in the collaboration, and [Jack Swigert](/source/Jack_Swigert) had died of cancer in 1982.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/35264367/the_south_bend_tribune/|title=In 'Lost Moon', Astronaut Recalls Apollo Scare|newspaper=The South Bend Tribune|location=South Bend, Indiana|date=December 11, 1994|page=E5|via=Newspapers.com|last1=Dunn|first1=Marcia}}</ref>

==Background==
Apollo 13 was the third mission of the [Apollo program](/source/Apollo_program) intended to land men on the Moon. An explosion of an onboard [liquid oxygen](/source/liquid_oxygen) tank in the Service Module, when the craft was close to reaching the Moon, crippled the electrical power generation and propulsion systems for the [Command Module](/source/Apollo_Command%2FService_Module) ''Odyssey''. This necessitated the abort of the lunar landing, and placed the lives of astronauts Lovell, [Jack Swigert](/source/Jack_Swigert), and [Fred Haise](/source/Fred_Haise) in serious jeopardy. The mission became famous for the safe return of the men, made possible by the [flight controller](/source/flight_controller)s' resourceful adaptation of the electrical, propulsion, and life support systems of the [Lunar Module](/source/Apollo_Lunar_Module) ''Aquarius'' as a "lifeboat".
