# Los Lagos, Chile

**Los Lagos** (los ˈlaɣos) is a [Chilean](/source/Chile) [city](/source/List_of_cities_in_Chile) and [commune](/source/Communes_of_Chile) in [Valdivia Province](/source/Valdivia_Province), [Los Ríos Region](/source/Los_R%C3%ADos_Region). [San Pedro River](/source/San_Pedro_River_(Chile)) passes by the city.

According to the 2002 [census](/source/Census) of the [National Statistics Institute](/source/National_Statistics_Institute_(Chile)), Los Lagos spans an area of 1,791.2 km2 (692 sq mi) and has 20,168 inhabitants (10,370 men and 9,798 women). Of these, 9,479 (47%) lived in [urban areas](/source/Urban_area) and 10,689 (53%) in [rural areas](/source/Rural_area). The population grew by 8.6% (1,604 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses.[1]

It has a large [German](/source/German_Chilean) presence, like the entire [Los Rios](/source/Los_Rios_Region) and [Los Lagos Regions](/source/Los_Lagos_Region).

## Administration

As a commune, Los Lagos is a third-level [administrative division of Chile](/source/Administrative_division_of_Chile) administered by a [municipal council](/source/Municipal_council), headed by an [alcalde](/source/Alcalde) who is directly elected every four years. The 2008-2012 alcalde is Samuel Torres Sepúlveda ([Ind.](/source/Independent_(politician))).[2][3]

Within the [electoral divisions of Chile](/source/Electoral_divisions_of_Chile), Los Lagos is represented in the [Chamber of Deputies](/source/Chamber_of_Deputies_of_Chile) by [Enrique Jaramillo](/source/Enrique_Jaramillo) ([PDC](/source/Christian_Democratic_Party)) and [Gastón von Mühlenbrock](/source/Gast%C3%B3n_von_M%C3%BChlenbrock) ([UDI](/source/Independent_Democratic_Union)) as part of the 54th electoral district, together with [Panguipulli](/source/Panguipulli,_Chile), [Futrono](/source/Futrono), [Lago Ranco](/source/Lago_Ranco,_Chile), [Río Bueno](/source/R%C3%ADo_Bueno,_Chile), [La Unión](/source/La_Uni%C3%B3n,_Chile) and [Paillaco](/source/Paillaco). The commune is represented in the as part of the 16th senatorial constituency (Los Ríos Region).
