Spanish rumba flamenca group

Los Chunguitos in 2019.

**Los Chunguitos** are a [Spanish](/source/Spain) [Romani](/source/Romani_people) [rumba flamenca](/source/Rumba_flamenca) group from [Badajoz](/source/Badajoz), [Extremadura](/source/Extremadura), formed in [Vallecas](/source/Vallecas), [Madrid](/source/Madrid) in 1973.

The group's nucleus was the three brothers Juan (1954), Manuel (1962), and José Salazar (1957), whose uncle was the [flamenco](/source/Flamenco) singer [Porrina de Badajoz](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Porrina_de_Badajoz&action=edit&redlink=1) [[es](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porrina_de_Badajoz)]. Their sisters, Toñi and Encarna, sang backup and would later go on to success on their own as [Azúcar Moreno](/source/Az%C3%BAcar_Moreno).

The name "Los Chunguitos" comes from the pastime of throwing small stones at trains. They began as street [buskers](/source/Busker), playing in [Madrid](/source/Madrid). In 1977, they auditioned at the offices of record label [EMI](/source/EMI), and producer [Raul Ros](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Raul_Ros&action=edit&redlink=1) [[es](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raul_Ros)] convinced the label to sign them.[1] They became hitmakers both in their own country and across Europe with songs such as "Dame veneno". They also appeared in the soundtracks to films such as *[Deprisa, Deprisa](/source/Deprisa%2C_Deprisa)*, *[Perros callejeros](/source/Street_Warriors_(1977_film))*, and *[Días contados](/source/D%C3%ADas_contados)*.

The group plays [rumba flamenca](/source/Rumba_flamenca) influenced by [Romani music](/source/Romani_music) and [Catalan rumba](/source/Catalan_rumba). Their lyrics often touch on [poverty](/source/Poverty) and misfortune.
