It was released on February 6, 2025, as a [Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) exclusive, with all of the proceeds from [digital sales](/source/Digital_album) being donated to the [Sweet Relief Musicians Fund](/source/Sweet_Relief_Musicians_Fund), as part of their efforts to provide financial assistance to artists and music professionals affected by the [wildfires](/source/January_2025_Southern_California_wildfires) that had hit [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles) in January of the same year.[1][2][3]

## Background and recording

From January 7 to 31, 2025, [a series of destructive wildfires](/source/January_2025_Southern_California_wildfires) affected the [metropolitan area](/source/Los_Angeles_metropolitan_area) of [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles), the [San Diego County](/source/San_Diego_County%2C_California) and other areas of the state of [California](/source/California),[4] killing at least 29 people in the process.[5] More than 12,000 structures have been reportedly destroyed in the wildfires,[1] while around 200,000 people were put under evacuation orders,[6] including the likes of [John Legend](/source/John_Legend) and [Chrissy Teigen](/source/Chrissy_Teigen), [Billy Corgan](/source/Billy_Corgan), [Rage Against the Machine](/source/Rage_Against_the_Machine) and [Audioslave](/source/Audioslave) drummer [Brad Wilk](/source/Brad_Wilk),[7] as well as musician [Kevin Haskins](/source/Kevin_Haskins) and producer [Nick Launay](/source/Nick_Launay).[1][2] Other artists' houses in Los Angeles were burned down in the wildfires,[8][9] including [Madlib](/source/Madlib),[10] [Jhené Aiko](/source/Jhen%C3%A9_Aiko), [Empress Of](/source/Empress_Of),[8] [Dawes](/source/Dawes_(band)) member Griffin Goldsmith,[8][9] [Fat Tony](/source/Fat_Tony_(rapper)), [Photay](/source/Photay) and [Zachary Cole Smith](/source/Zachary_Cole_Smith).[8]

In the aftermath of the wildfires, Haskins and Launay – who both had to evacuate their homes, but ultimately did not lose them or their recording studios – decided to create a [compilation album](/source/Compilation_album) to raise money for those affected and asked various previous collaborators for unreleased recordings that could be made available for the collection.[1][2] Haskins was best known for being a member of British rock group [Bauhaus](/source/Bauhaus_(band)), and his brother and bandmate [David J](/source/David_J) was among the contributors of the LP; Launay had previously produced for the likes of [Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds](/source/Nick_Cave_and_the_Bad_Seeds) and [Yeah Yeah Yeahs](/source/Yeah_Yeah_Yeahs), with both bands also being featured on the charity project.[1][11] Other artists who had donated tracks for the compilation included [PJ Harvey](/source/PJ_Harvey), [Red Hot Chili Peppers](/source/Red_Hot_Chili_Peppers) members [Flea](/source/Flea_(musician)) and [John Frusciante](/source/John_Frusciante), [Danny Elfman](/source/Danny_Elfman), [Devo](/source/Devo), [Gary Numan](/source/Gary_Numan), [Primal Scream](/source/Primal_Scream) and [Jarvis Cocker](/source/Jarvis_Cocker).[2][3]

All of the 16 tracks included on *Los Angeles Rising* were previously unreleased, including an alternative take of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 2006 single "[Turn Into](/source/Turn_Into_(song))" and a cover of [the Mamas & the Papas](/source/The_Mamas_%26_the_Papas)' song "[California Dreamin'](/source/California_Dreamin')" by Cocker, originally recorded in 2020.[1][11] The press release for the project mistakenly noted the song "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything", recorded by Haskins, Garret Vandermolen and [Danny Lohner](/source/Danny_Lohner), as being part of the tracklist;[1][2] however, the track was replaced with "Shadow Fandance", by [Natacha Atlas](/source/Natacha_Atlas) and [Samy Bishai](/source/Celloman), on the album's official [Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) page.[12]

## Release and promotion

*Los Angeles Rising* was released on February 6, 2025 as a [Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) exclusive,[3][12] with all of the proceeds from [digital sales](/source/Digital_album) being donated to the [Sweet Relief Musicians Fund](/source/Sweet_Relief_Musicians_Fund),[1][2] as part of their efforts to provide financial assistance to artists and music professionals affected by the wildfires that had hit Los Angeles in January of the same year.[2][9] On the same day, Cocker's cover of [the Mamas & the Papas](/source/The_Mamas_%26_the_Papas)' song "[California Dreamin'](/source/California_Dreamin')" was released as the lead single from the project.[1][13] The album was one of several raising money in response to the fires, with others including *[Super Bloom: A Benefit for Los Angeles Fire Relief](/source/Super_Bloom%3A_A_Benefit_for_Los_Angeles_Fire_Relief)* and *Good Music to Lift Los Angeles*.[14]
