# Lorraine Pintal

Canadian actor and director

**Lorraine Pintal** [OC](/source/Officer_of_the_Order_of_Canada), (born September 24, 1951) is a [Canadian](/source/Canadians) actor, director, producer and playwright.[1]

## Biography

The daughter of Jean Pintal and Anne-Marie Bélanger, she was born in [Plessisville](/source/Plessisville) and studied at the [Conservatoire Lassalle](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Conservatoire_Lassalle&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservatoire_Lassalle)][2] and the [Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal](/source/Conservatoire_d'art_dramatique_de_Montr%C3%A9al). She debuted with the [Théâtre du Nouveau Monde](/source/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_du_Nouveau_Monde) in 1973 in *[Mistero Buffo](/source/Mistero_Buffo)*. In the same year, she was a co-founder of the Théâtre de La Rallonge. Pintal directed a number of works for the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde as well as for the [Compagnie Jean-Duceppe](/source/Compagnie_Jean-Duceppe) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compagnie_Jean-Duceppe)], the [Théâtre de Quat'Sous](/source/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_Quat'Sous) and for the [Théâtre Denise-Pelletier](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_Denise-Pelletier&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_Denise-Pelletier)].[3] She wrote and acted in the one woman performance *Madame Louis 14*.[1]

Pintal has been artistic director for the [Théâtre du Nouveau Monde](/source/Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_du_Nouveau_Monde) since 1992.[3]

As a stage director, she was recognized by the Association québécoise des critiques de théâtre (AQCT) for *HA ha !...* in 1990 and *Hosanna* in 1991. *Les oranges sont vertes* received a Masque Award in 1998 for best staging and best production. She received a [Gascon-Thomas Award](/source/Gascon-Thomas_Award) in 2001 from the [National Theatre School of Canada](/source/National_Theatre_School_of_Canada).[1]

Pintal also produced a number of television series: *[Le Grand Remous](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Le_Grand_Remous&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Grand_Remous)]* (1988–90) and *[Montréal P.Q.](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Montr%C3%A9al_P.Q.&action=edit&redlink=1) [[fr](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montr%C3%A9al_P.Q.)]* (1990-92), as well as television plays: *Hosanna* (1991), *Tartuffe* (1997) and *Bilan* (2002).[1]

In 2002, she was named to the [Order of Canada](/source/Order_of_Canada).[4]

In 2014, she was an unsuccessful [Parti Québécois](/source/Parti_Qu%C3%A9b%C3%A9cois) candidate in the Quebec riding of [Verdun](/source/Verdun_(provincial_electoral_district)), losing to Liberal [Jacques Daoust](/source/Jacques_Daoust).[5]

In 2019, she was the recipient of a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award as part of the [Governor General's Performing Arts Awards](/source/Governor_General's_Performing_Arts_Awards).[6] In 2021 she received the [Prix Denise-Filiatrault](/source/Prix_Denise-Filiatrault) for her body of work.[7]

In 2025's Montreal municipal election, she ran for a council seat in the borough of Rosemont–La Petite Patrie, with the Ensemble party.[8] She did not win her election.
