# Lontara

**Lontara** or **lontaraq** (ᨒᨚᨈᨑ) are Bugis-Makassar [palm-leaf manuscripts](/source/Palm-leaf_manuscript) that record knowledge on such topics as [history](/source/History), [science](/source/Science), [custom](/source/Norm_(social)), and [laws](/source/Law).[1] The term originates from the [Javanese](/source/Javanese_language)/[Malay](/source/Malay_language) word *lontar*, which is the name of the palm tree *[Borassus flabellifer](/source/Borassus_flabellifer)* that provides the leaves used.

1. *bilang* or *kotika* ([bug](/source/Buginese_language)-[mak](/source/Makassarese_language)) – characteristics of each day of the week

1. *ulu ada* ([bug](/source/Buginese_language)) or *ulu kana* ([mak](/source/Makassarese_language)) – past treaties or texts between kingdoms or countries

1. *pangoriseng* ([bug](/source/Buginese_language)) or *pannossorang* ([mak](/source/Makassarese_language)) – genealogies of the royals.
