# Longwarry

**Longwarry** is a town in [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Australia)), [Australia](/source/Australia), 83 kilometres (52 mi) south-east of [Melbourne's](/source/Melbourne) [Central Business District](/source/Melbourne_city_centre), located within the Shires of [Baw Baw](/source/Shire_of_Baw_Baw) and [Cardinia](/source/Shire_of_Cardinia) [local government areas](/source/Local_government_areas_of_Victoria). Longwarry recorded a population of 2,436 at the [2021 census](/source/2021_Australian_census).[1]

It has one primary school, Longwarry Primary School.

Longwarry is bypassed by the [Princes Freeway](/source/Princes_Freeway).

## History

The [railway](/source/Bairnsdale_V/Line_rail_service) arrived in 1879 and a post office opened on 20 June 1881. The post office was renamed Longwarry South (later Ripplebrook) on 1 September 1882, the same day a new office, named Longwarry, opened near [the railway station](/source/Longwarry_railway_station).[2]

[Longwarry railway station](/source/Longwarry_railway_station) provides rail services to [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) as well as [Bairnsdale](/source/Bairnsdale,_Victoria).

The town has an [Australian Rules](/source/Australian_Rules) football team competing in the [Ellinbank & District Football League](/source/Ellinbank_%26_District_Football_League).[3]
