In August 1983, it was the site of a disaster when 50 ships were trapped in ice, with the loss of one and damage to as many as 30 others.

This strait separates [Wrangel Island](/source/Wrangel_Island) from the [Siberia](/source/Siberia)n mainland.<ref>[http://pubs.aina.ucalgary.ca/arctic/Arctic21-1-27.pdf Currents in Long Strait, Arctic Ocean]</ref>  It is very broad, its minimum width being 141&nbsp;km, between [Cape Blossom](/source/Cape_Blossom_(Wrangel_Island)) at the southwestern tip of Wrangel Island and [Cape Yakan](/source/Cape_Yakan), 65 km east of [Cape Billings](/source/Cape_Billings), close to [Gytkhelen](/source/Gytkhelen), [Chukotka](/source/Chukotka_Autonomous_Okrug).<ref>[GoogleEarth](/source/GoogleEarth)</ref> 

The Long Strait is also a geographic landmark connecting the [East Siberian Sea](/source/East_Siberian_Sea) and the [Chukchi Sea](/source/Chukchi_Sea).
