# Loasa

***Loasa*** is a [genus](/source/Genus_(biology)) of [flowering plants](/source/Flowering_plant) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Loasaceae](/source/Loasaceae). The genus contains about 100 species native to [Central](/source/Central_America) and [South America](/source/South_America).[1][2] of which *[Loasa vulcanica](/source/Loasa_vulcanica)* is perhaps the best known. Species of *Loasa* are prickly [herbs](/source/Herb) or [shrubs](/source/Shrub) that have [nettle](/source/Nettle)-like stinging hairs.[2] Some species of *Loasa* are grown as [ornamental plants](/source/Ornamental_plant) and are known as **Chile nettle**.[3] Its flowers have five yellow petals covering united stamens and distinctive large coloured nectaries. *[Caiophora](/source/Caiophora)* is a closely related genus that also has stinging hairs and is found on rocky slopes of the [Andes](/source/Andes).[2]
