"'''Loading Zones'''" is a song by American [indie rock](/source/indie_rock) musician [Kurt Vile](/source/Kurt_Vile), released as the first single from his 2018 album ''[Bottle It In](/source/Bottle_It_In)''. Though the song's title refers to Vile's bragging about his skill at [parking in restricted areas](/source/Parking_violation) without receiving a [parking ticket](/source/parking_ticket), it is more generally an ode to his hometown of [Lansdowne, Pennsylvania](/source/Lansdowne%2C_Pennsylvania).

==Background and writing==
Kurt Vile wrote the song during the recording sessions for ''[B'lieve I'm Goin Down...](/source/B'lieve_I'm_Goin_Down...)'', but would not record it until more than two years later.<ref name=DorkInt>{{cite web |last=Konemann |first=Liam |title=Kurt Vile: Life Is Beautiful and Terrifying and Hilarious |url=https://www.readdork.com/features/kurt-vile-interview-nov18 |website=[Dork](/source/Dork_(magazine)) |accessdate=24 August 2019 |date=October 15, 2018}}</ref> He wrote the song as an ode to his hometown.<ref name=DorkInt/><ref name=VerifBreak>{{cite web |last=Rindner |first=Grant |title=Kurt Vile Breaks Down "Loading Zones" on Genius' Series 'Verified' |url=https://genius.com/videos/Kurt-vile-breaks-down-loading-zones |website=[Genius](/source/Genius_(website)) |accessdate=24 August 2019}}</ref> The lines "Sure they knighted me yesterday" and "by mayoral decree" refer to his being given the [key to the city](/source/key_to_the_city).<ref name=VerifBreak/>

Vile said that the song's various metaphors are very loose and "not too scientific".<ref name=VerifBreak/>

==Critical reception==
The song was acclaimed by ''[Rolling Stone](/source/Rolling_Stone)'' for its "layered guitar gorgeousness" that sounds like "a meld of languid gothic-folk fingerpicking, watery strumming and some weirdly soulful [talkbox](/source/talkbox)y wah-wah jive that suggests [Joe Walsh](/source/Joe_Walsh) by way of [Future](/source/Future_(rapper))".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/kurt-vile-loading-zones-song-710932/|title=Song You Need to Know: Kurt Vile 'Loading Zones'|last=Dolan|first=Joe|date=August 16, 2018|accessdate=October 13, 2018}}</ref> ''[Pitchfork](/source/Pitchfork_(website))'' expressed approval for the optimistic and easily identifiable lyrics, as well as the "low-key psychedelic riffage."<ref>{{cite web |last=Reese |first=Nathan |title=Loading Zones by Kurt Vile Review |url=https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/kurt-vile-loading-zones/ |website=[Pitchfork](/source/Pitchfork_(website)) |accessdate=24 August 2019 |date=August 16, 2018}}</ref>

==Promotion==
Vile promoted the release of the song by mailing fans envelopes marked "Violators" that contained fake [parking ticket](/source/parking_ticket)s.<ref name="Pitchfork">{{cite web|url=https://pitchfork.com/news/kurt-vile-returns-with-new-song-loading-zones-listen/|title=Kurt Vile Returns With New Song 'Loading Zones': Listen|work=[Pitchfork](/source/Pitchfork_(website))|last=Bloom|first=Madison|date=August 16, 2018|accessdate=October 13, 2018}}</ref> Some were also placed on car windshields.<ref name="Pitchfork"/>

==Music video==
The music video was released on August 16, 2018, and features Vile driving around [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia), where he was raised, eluding the [meter maid](/source/meter_maid)s in comedic fashion.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.npr.org/2018/08/16/639199872/kurt-vile-parks-for-free-in-loading-zones?t=1535548560763|title=Kurt Vile Parks For Free In 'Loading Zones'|last=McKenna|first=Lindsey|date=August 16, 2018|work=NPR|accessdate=August 29, 2018}}</ref> The meter maids were played by American actor [Kevin Corrigan](/source/Kevin_Corrigan) and [Pissed Jeans](/source/Pissed_Jeans) frontman Matt Korvette, and the video was directed by Drew Saracco.<ref>{{cite web |last=Schatz |first=Lake |title=Kurt Vile Returns with "Loading Zones", his First New Song in Three Years: Stream |url=https://consequence.net/2018/08/kurt-vile-loading-zones/ |website=[Consequence of Sound](/source/Consequence_of_Sound) |access-date=24 August 2019 |date=August 16, 2018}}</ref>
