The **Little Iskut River** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Iskut River](/source/Iskut_River) in the northwest part of the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada), in [Cassiar Land District](/source/Cassiar_Land_District).[1][7] From its source at [Little Ball Lake](/source/Little_Ball_Lake) in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park), the Little Iskut River flows about 45 km (28 mi),[5] generally north to the vicinity of Mowdale Lake, then southeast and south to the Iskut River just below [Cascade Falls](/source/Cascade_Falls_(Iskut_River)). The Little Iskut River is part of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River) [drainage basin](/source/Drainage_basin), as the Iskut River is a major tributary of the Stikine.

The Little Iskut River's watershed covers 453 km2 (175 sq mi) and its mean annual [discharge](/source/Discharge_(hydrology)) is an estimated 12.8 m3/s (450 cu ft/s). The river's watershed's [land cover](/source/Land_cover) is classified as 36.8% [conifer forest](/source/Conifer), 27.9% [barren](/source/Barren_vegetation), 17.3% [shrubland](/source/Shrubland), 10.3% [herbaceous](/source/Herbaceous_plant), and small amounts of other cover.[6]

The mouth of the Little Iskut River is located about 73 km (45 mi) southeast of [Telegraph Creek, British Columbia](/source/Telegraph_Creek%2C_British_Columbia), about 110 km (68 mi) south of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake), and about 165 km (103 mi) northeast of [Wrangell, Alaska](/source/Wrangell%2C_Alaska).[8][2]

The Little Iskut River is in the asserted traditional territory of the [Tahltan First Nation](/source/Tahltan_First_Nation) and [Iskut First Nation](/source/Iskut_First_Nation), of the [Tahltan](/source/Tahltan) people.[9]

## Geography

The Little Iskut River originates at Little Ball Lake[10] just south of [Kounugu Mountain](/source/Kounugu_Mountain).[11] It flows northeast through the southern part of Mount Edziza Provincial Park, then north, forming the southeastern boundary of the park.[12] It collects tributary streams flowing east from the [Spectrum Range](/source/Spectrum_Range).[13] [Stewbomb Creek](/source/Stewbomb_Creek)[14] and its tributary [Artifact Creek](/source/Artifact_Creek)[15] flow from [Obsidian Ridge](/source/Obsidian_Ridge),[16] [Artifact Ridge](/source/Artifact_Ridge),[17] and high mountains including [Yeda Peak](/source/Yeda_Peak)[18] and [Kitsu Peak](/source/Kitsu_Peak).[19] [Bourgeaux Creek](/source/Bourgeaux_Creek)[20] and its tributary [Gerlib Creek](/source/Gerlib_Creek)[21] also flow east from the Spectrum Range, Artifact Ridge, and high peaks including [Tadeda Peak](/source/Tadeda_Peak)[22] and [Armadillo Peak](/source/Armadillo_Peak).[23]

Between Stewbomb Creek and Bourgeaux Creek the historic [Yukon Telegraph Trail](/source/Yukon_Telegraph_Trail) crosses the Little Iskut River, following Bourgeaux Creek over [Raspberry Pass](/source/Raspberry_Pass) to Mess Creek, continuing north along the western side of the [Mount Edziza volcanic complex](/source/Mount_Edziza_volcanic_complex) to [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek) on the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River).[24] After Bourgeaux Creek, near Mowdade Lake,[25] the Little Iskut turns sharply to flow southeast. It empties into the Iskut River just downstream of [Cascade Falls](/source/Cascade_Falls_(Iskut_River)).[26]

The Little Iskut River is a major tributary of the Iskut River. About 5% of its watershed is glacier-covered. Much of the lower Little Iskut River is braided.[27][8][2][24]

## Geology

During the [Miocene](/source/Miocene) epoch, a series of lava flows from the adjacent Mount Edziza volcanic complex travelled east into the Little Iskut River. Here, the flows formed a [lava dam](/source/Lava_dam) behind which water ponded to form Raspberry Lake. Water discharging from this prehistoric lake eventually cut through the eastern edge of this dam to create a new course for the Little Iskut River.[28]
