The color of [barley wines](/source/Barley_wine) ranges from a translucent deep [amber](/source/Amber), to cloudy [mahogany](/source/Mahogany) (left), to a near-[opaque](/source/Opaque) black (right).

[Barley](/source/Barley), a member of the [grass family](/source/Poaceae), was one of the first domesticated grains in the [Fertile Crescent](/source/Fertile_Crescent) and drinks made from it range from thin [herbal teas](/source/Herbal_tea) and [beers](/source/Beer) to thicker drinkable [puddings](/source/Pudding) and [gruels](/source/Gruel).

Barley has been used as a source of [fermentable](/source/Ferment) material for beer for thousands of years and [whiskey](/source/Whiskey) for centuries. Barley beer was probably one of the first [alcoholic drinks](/source/Alcoholic_drink) developed by Neolithic humans. More recently, it has been used as a component of various health foods and drinks.

In 2016, barley was ranked fourth among grains in quantity produced (141 million tonnes) behind [maize](/source/Maize), [rice](/source/Rice), and [wheat](/source/Wheat) (all of which are used for beer).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
